FORT MYERS: One deputy was transported to the hospital and a suspect has been charged after a domestic dispute in Fort Myers early Sunday morning.

Shane Plazola, 32, is charged with domestic battery, as well as battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence, after the incident.

Lee County deputies responded to 12130 Hibiscus Drive after a report of a domestic disturbance.

Tamie Renna Wheeler, 38, the suspect's girlfriend, reported that Plazola had physically assaulted her and the couple's son.

According to the report, Plazola was in the house asleep when deputies arrived.

Three deputies entered the home and were unsuccessful at waking Plazola.

Deputy Ronald Flynn "leaned in close to his facial area to ascertain if he was breathing," when Plazola "awoke and punched Deputy Flynn to the left cheek area knocking him backwards," said the report.

"Plazola became enraged," it continues, "and lunged towards the deputies at which time several attempts to use department issued Tasers to bring Plazola into compliance were utilized."

According to the report, Deputy Flynn discharged a Taser into his own hand while attempting to push the suspect away.

Flynn was transported to Lee Memorial Health Park, while Plazola was taken to Lee County Jail.

LCSO Major Crimes Unit detectives took over the investigation and determined the deputies were in compliance with department policy at the time of the incident.

Yeah, god forbid they taser the perp. THAT would be non-compliant with policy.

Barney, from now on you have to keep your Taser battery in your shirt pocket with your bullet. And keep the terminals covered or else your bullet might short out your battery.

Ok, not an expert on tasers here but, wouldn't firing a taser into someone while you are touching them (ie. pushing them away) be a really bad idea? Even if he hadn't (apparently) shot his own hand, wouldn't he have gotten shocked too by the taser just by being in contact with him at the time?

Very poor weapons discipline - good thing it wasn't his handgun he was shooting with. A good rule of thumb (bad pun) is don't discharge any weapon with any part of your body in front of the muzzle - even if you're sure you're not in the way - from the muzzle forward is no-man's land.

Fort Myers ain’t San Francisco. You’re in bed asleep and are awakened by a guy hovering a couple of inches from your mouth, the guy’s gonna get a punchin’.

A few years ago, some local PD were helping in a high-speed pursuit of a bank robber from Louisville and managed to stop the guy with stop-sticks. The guy fought back when a deputy tried to pull him out of the car. During the struggle, the deputy drew his sidearm and continued to pull the suspect out of his vehicle. The deputy was slammed against the side of the car and he reflexively squeezed the trigger, discharging one round, which blew the thumb off his other hand before striking the suspect in the side of the head and killing him.
