Study: Illegal immigration from Mexico declines overall, but not in Texas
Dallas Morning News ^ | 09/01/2010 | Diane Solis

The unlawful flow of Mexican immigrants into the U.S. continues to slow, and the nation's illegal immigrant population is down by nearly 1 million people, the Pew Hispanic Center said in a report released today.

But Texas didn't show a decline in the most recent period of study, 2007 to 2009.Instead it showed an increase of 200,000, which the reports' authors said was not statistically significant.

The report by the Pew Hispanic Center avoids naming causes for the contraction to 11.1 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. But it notes that the recession and tougher immigration enforcement paralleled a trend that "represents the first significant reversal in the growth of this population over the past two decades."

The findings come at a time when the national debate over illegal immigration grows more vigorous and polarized. Rancor comes from Arizona's tough new immigration law, which is being challenged in the federal courts. And while some press for a partial legalization program for those here illegally, others have called for an end to birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants.

Much of the drop the Pew reports found in the unauthorized immigrant population comes from the nation's Southeast coast and the states of Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

"In the case of Mexico, the inflow has dropped but the outflow hasn't changed so those two numbers are in rough balance," said Jeffrey Passel, the report's co-author and a prominent demographer.

Why Texas' population of illegal immigrants hasn't declined is up for debate.

How much is illegal immigration “from Mexico” (of Mexican citizens) and how much is illegal immigration “from Mexico” that was expediated across our southern border by a Mexican government that decided to send them OUR way rather than “send back them” across Mexico’s own southern border?

Can we talk Jan into running against Perry?

She would win in a landslide.

He’s still better than any dumbocrat.

At least part of the reason is that Perry has vocally opposed (for most intents and purposes) the AZ law. To illegals, he’s basically saying, “Welcome mat’s out, compadres!”

I don’t care what an article says or doesn’t say, illegal Mexican immigration has increased here in Maryland. In fact, to the visible eye, it has increased quite dramatically. Just a thought

The Pew study depends upon self identified illegal immigrants, and focuses on border states, and this study supposedly concentrates on those from Mexico alone.

In Maryland, there's a huge population of illegal Brazilians, as well as those smuggled from Guatemala. Both of those aren't counted on the Pew study.

Still looking at an overall illegal population of 20 million people... That's a job for every person who is looking, or has stopped looking. Illegal immigration doesn't hurt anyone, of course... Or so we're lied to about.

I love Texas, but that will end as illegals help turn it into another liberal cesspool.

The reason illegal immigration hasn’t declined in Texas is Rick Perry is up for re-election.

Let’s see what happens after November.

This shows me one thing, although we all knew it previously.

Many of these Southern Border intruders are not ‘immigrants’ legal or illegal.

An immigrant is a person that comes to a country to live permanently.

By crossing the border for a job, sending the money home to the native

country, then going home when the job goes away disqualifies them from

being called ‘immigrant’.

OK, we'll call them illegal migrants then.

That kinda takes illegals down a notch in terms of imparting fictional rights to them.
