State Treasurer Hasn’t Paid Taxes In 10 Years (Massachusetts)
Judicial Watch ^ | September 1, 2010

Following the steps of the nation’s Treasury Secretary and a powerful New York congressman, a two-term state treasurer who portrays himself as a vigilant custodian of public money has failed to pay taxes over the past decade. Massachusetts Treasurer Timothy Cahill, a gubernatorial candidate, owes the state about $15,000 in taxes for income his campaign committee account has earned from investments in the last ten years. Like the other high-profile public servants who failed miserably to fulfill their civic duty, Cahill only agreed to right the wrong after the media exposed the crime.

Cahill has raised millions of dollars for his political campaigns over the years, much of it from sources with business before his agency, and a local newspaper discovered that there was no record of checks to the state to cover taxes. A former Democrat who is running for governor as an independent, Cahill quickly acknowledged the “lapse” and vowed to pay the decades worth of taxes.

He’s hardly the only public servant to blow off taxes. President Obama’s Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, got busted during confirmation hearings for failing to pay $34,000 in federal taxes on his lucrative salary at the International Monetary Fund. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) graciously waived the hefty penalties when Geithner was forced to pay the debt before getting confirmed.

Another high-profile tax evader, ethically challenged Harlem Congressman Charles Rangel, was actually the chairman of the House committee (Ways and Means) that writes the tax policy for the entire nation when he blew off the IRS. For two decades Rangel, who is embroiled in a major ethics scandal, “forgot” to pay taxes on rental income from a Caribbean villa.

Tax delinquency is so rampant among federal workers—including those at key presidential cabinet agencies—that Congress introduced legislation last year to fire derelict employees and ban the hiring of other scofflaws. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees and retirees owe Uncle Sam billions of dollars in taxes and the figure increases annually, according to the IRS, which revealed that in 2008 alone 276,300 federal workers stiffed the government out of $3.04 billion in taxes.

Taxes for thee (that I will personally collect), but not for me.

Geitner and Rangel blew off personal income taxes. This is from the campaign account. Of course, never having more than a few thousand dollars in my account at anytime. I wasn’t aware it was an interest bearing account. In fact, I’m sure it’s not. That’s how it’s a 501 c 3 account.

Now that I've been caught, I'll pay.

Doesn't that require some interest to be paid also?

How very John Kerry of him.

I'm not thrilled at all with Charlie Baker, who reeks of RINO, but I think he is our one slim chance against gargantuan tax increases. Patrick will tax us to poverty if he's reelected, and anyone who thinks "health care is a right" (Cahill) will not work to undo the tax monster called Romneycare.

Better someone who votes with you some of the time than someone who never votes with you at all.

He was a Democrat, elected as a Democrat, but decided to go Independent and is running against incumbent Dem. Gov. Deval “Barack Jr.” Patrick and Republican Charlie Baker.

Some in GOP are not fond of Baker and have said they may support Cahill. Here’s the gist of what will probably happen: Deval, vastly unpopular even in MA, will squeak by as
Cahill takes anti-Deval votes away from Baker.

Howie Carr: “Deval can’t win without Cahill, and Cahill
can’t win, period.”

A vote for Cahill helps to re-elect Deval Patrick. This
message brought to you by Republicans for Deval Patrick...

Democrat Tim Cahill will help Democrat Deval Patrick win re-election despite Patrick being only around 35 per cent in the polls.

yup! from RedMassGroup (Baker campaign, get a “watchdog” ad ready...a sleeping huge St Bernard who doesn’t notice
that 15k wasn’t paid by CAHILL’S CAMPAIGN!):

Tim Cahill admitted to the Boston Globe yesterday that his campaign failed to pay $15,000 in state income taxes for employees over the past ten years.

State Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill acknowledged last night that his campaign committee failed to pay an estimated $15,000 in state income taxes over the past decade, as required by law.

Cahill’s campaign made the admission in an unusual written statement following a Globe inquiry yesterday afternoon about why there was no record of checks to the state to cover taxes on interest the campaign committee’s account has earned from investments it made in certificates of deposit.

Cahill, who was evidently caught off-guard by the lapse, vowed to pay the taxes immediately. But the delinquency is a source of embarrassment for the two-term treasurer, who has sought to promote an image as a prudent watchdog of public dollars and guardian of the public Treasury.

anyone who thinks "health care is a right" (Cahill) will not work to undo the tax monster called Romneycare.

Cahill said early on that Romneycare is a disaster (though he also said -- unfathomably to me -- that it couldn't be repealed). Baker's recent background is in health insurance, isn't it? Hard to picture him saying anything substantive against RomneyCare! At least I haven't heard him.

All recent discussions of "health care" seem not to recognize that insurance is not health care. I don't think anyone wants to see people dying in the streets for want of health care.
