The Couric-Rich Model of the Five Stages of MSM Grief
Eddriscoll.com ^ | August 31, 2010 | Ed Driscoll

“The Five Stages of Grief: The Left Wing Now Gets Angry,” Rob Long writes at Ricochet, noting that the MSM has moved up a notch on the Kubler-Ross model of the Five Stages of Grief: Now they’re turning to Stage Two: Anger. Angry at the voters, at Fox News, at Obama himself. Next up: Bargaining. I’m not sure when that’s going to start — probably a few weeks after Labor Day. But as always, what we’re all waiting for is Stage Four: Depression.

Depression? Hey, the economy’s waaaay ahead of them on that one! But seriously, as Matthew Sheffield quips, “Hating your countrymen is the new patriotism:”

In short: liberals don’t hate America, they simply hate Americans, especially when they won’t go along with such obviously good things such as President Obama’s healthcare law, “economic stimulus” spending, nationalizing student loans, unilaterally disarming American nuclear weapons, or raising taxes in an anemic economy. Having fully embraced the notion that Judeo-Greco-Roman society has engaged in systematic “cultural imperialism,” the modern Left has embraced what might be termed “cultural inferiorism” as a means to atone....

The reason for this rhetorical disparity is that conservatives and libertarians seem to have a much better grounding in the idea that they have a political ideology. Liberals lack this sense, believing their ideology to be literally incommensurable to other ideologies. To oppose liberalism is thus not only intellectually incorrect, it is also an affront to common decency.

This isn’t all that new a development of course — Krauthammer’s Law was coined in 2002. Ace of Spades joked about the left’s “Ike Turner school of patriotism” back in 2007 — “Those who love America show it by denigrating and beating the sh*t out of her at every opportunity.”....

Now we know why the country has become “ungovernable,” last year’s excuse for the Democrats’ failure of governance: Who can possibly govern a nation of racist, nativist, homophobic Islamophobes?...

This is the best thing I've read all day. Long, but hits all the bases.

This bit, from the Sultan Knish link in the article:
"The left's hijacking of American culture has turned institutions into rags and rubble, and it will only get worse. Because the left does not know when to stop. Does not understand that it should stop."
is what makes this crowd that is in charge right now so frightening.

Stage 1: Denial
Stage 2: Anger (Isn't this a normal state for a liberal?)
Stage 3: Bargaining
They are going to throw every gift they can imagine at the uninformed, unprincipled moderate swing voters between now and November 2. You will see Democrats attending church, showing up at military bases to support the troops, kissing babies at county fairs and tractor-pulls...

Great article, but doesn't it kind of give the impression that with a big win in Nov the Marxists are just going to role over?

In my mind a big win in Nov is just a small baby step, an enormous amount of work needs to be done at that point to repair all the damage. Not just from the Obama administration but from all the Marxist/Progressives that have infiltrated and have been incrementally moving us to this point.

It kind of gives the impression that it will go from Anger to Bargaining to Submission? I think we have not even begun to see the anger and venom that will be spewed if they lose control.

It's a great article.

Like a novelist the author compresses time to increase the tempo of the story and thus misses a key element in the Democrats over-reaching since Obama took power. The author totally misses the 2004 election and the angst that Kerry's loss caused the left.

To the Leftists Kerry's loss shows the ineptitude of the democrat party. He's their version of how Conservatives look at Bob Dole or John McCain. Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004 fueled their vision of how Obama should govern. Now, it could cost them their party.

Thank God.

I tend to agree with you, and I think the anger that explodes will provide us with many weeks of entertainment. Neither the president nor Pelosi and Reid THOUGHT THROUGH what would be the result of pushing their socialist agenda down everyone’s throat. What I want to know is how and how thoroughly the Republicans are going to dismantle the programs, particularly the socialized medicine being foisted on us. Wait until October (timing is nice) when everyone’s health insurance premium skyrockets, and they get a good taste of the redistribution of wealth involved. That should be the frosting on the cake.

Some days I am optimistic and some pessimistic.

When I think of the mountain of obligated debt out there in SS, Medicaid/Medicare, Federal and State retirements, not to mention all the union pensions that are underfunded (Calif state workers alone have a 500 Billion underfunded pension plan!!!), I think there is absolutely no way out... I listened to Rush the other day and a teacher from Mass called in and he said he is sick of the Dems but wants to know what the Rebubs are going to do for him... How can we succeed as a nation if half of us are holding a hand out expecting someone else to do for them?

But when I see Murkowski get booted by Miller, other successes of the Tea Party movement, and the success of the 8/28 rally I do see a glimmer of hope.

I just don't think there are enough of us yet though. 9/11 brought a little unity for a short amount of time, but I could see even shortly afterward the Libs were only grudgingly going along because they could see opposition was a losing hand. To get everyone on the same financial page do you think it is going to take a “financial 9/11”, a decade or more of this Depression, or will the implementation of Obamacare simply be enough?

Personally, I think it is going to take something big, people generally don't change unless they have no choice.

Would be glad to hear your thoughts. I have followed some of your posts lately and I respect your opinion.
