With a Wimper or a Bang—or Not at All?
Pajamas Media ^ | August 18, 2010 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 08/18/2010 10:52:26 PM PDT by Rashputin

I don’t believe America is in inevitable decline or will falter, but I am starting to see things, superficially, that I have not observed in the past.

Wimper.

In just the last 24 Hours:

- Speaker of the House wants Federal investigation of any that oppose the Ground Zero Mosque.

- State Department pays for Imams ME Trips.

- NY offers State land to move Mosque.

-Federal Appeals Court Rules Against Utah Memorial Crosses Along Highway

We deserve slaughter to make room for a better more patriotic generation.

I also see the roads, and feel the pain.....so much trash on our highways in CA, right in HEART of Silico Valley. Third world like road conditions. If we are busted here, we must be busted everywhere.

Also, the great sales that people are offerring.

Taco Bell’s 2 dollar meal, and I see even professional workers getting it.

I used to wish Pizza Hut would sell its Pizza cheap. It used to be 20+ dollars to get a large one with toppings and taxes and bread-sticks, it used to come out to like 30bucks.

Now, they offer any Pizza with ANY toppings at 10 bucks. Before something like that alone would run you 30bucks.

So it is not like corporations all of a sudden developed a heart. And this after our Dollar is so cheap right now. Has been diluted like crazy and they are still offerring such deals.

There are commercials playing on RADIO CONSTANTLY about Food Stamp programs and how almost anyone qualifies.

Ofcourse the Debt-Reduction guys have flooded the airways.

The Gold grubbers are out in force too.

Now they are throwing in 100 dollars of BONUS paper money if you send them Gold you don’t need.

They know the Bonus they are sending is made out of Toilet paper.

We just declassified Taliban as Terrorist. Only reason has to be that we are about to NEGOTIATE.

Yet what is our Nation’s BIGGEST political issue right now?

MOSQUE near Ground Zero.

It is safe to say WE ARE IN TROUBLE.

Minor quibble: “...Rome in the latter fifth century BC...” did not decline insidiously. Around the 5th century BC, Rome was busy transforming from a monarchy to the incredible republic it eventually became. Now, in the 5th century AD, Rome did decline, and not all that insidiously, as the late emperors were corrupt and weak, the empire huge and fractious, and the neighbors powerful and expansionist.

I know that special prosecutors like Patrick Fitzgerald, hold press conferences, bankrupt their prey through drawn-out legal procedures, and then usually fail to prove much of anything against the likes of a Scooter Libby or Blago, (and so settle for perjury convictions when they find contradictions in the miles of confused subpoenaed testimony.)

Fitzpatrick should be in jail for his malicious prosecution of Scooter Libby. Now he loses on 23 of 24 counts against Blago.

As always, VDH has some great ideas. But with the usurper in office, they are all but impossible to implement.

Are you suggesting that the mosque is not a serious problem?

He's articulating thoughts as he sees decline.

The mosque should be a battle cry and staging area, not an argument about developement.

We can’t have a more patriotic generation without first concieving them, giving birth to them (those that can, anyway) and raising them. Not trying to be difficult, trying to point out missing element.

No, I am suggesting any problem can become life and death, if you make the worst assumptions, based on incendiary comments, designed to have that effect.

How? And if this one mosque can accomplish that, then why not shut down rest of them? What about the mosques in West Point and Pentagon that are operational today? Why are there no protests scheduled to shut them down? What about the mosque that is operational now, even closer to WTC site than Park-51. Is that one not a danger to America, but the new proposed one is?

His diagnosis is sound. His solutions strike me as, let’s say, optimistic.

The acid test will be the great depression or the great stagflation or whatever period of penance we are entering into. We saw how our nation handled such things in the past, when we were still cohesive enough to be called a nation, and when our people were in tune with reality.

We are now fragmented and used to illusion.

The mosque at Ground Zero is a symbol of Islamic victory, a reality recognized by a majority of Americans.

Symbols serve a purpose. We have the Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, our flag. They're a shorthand way of expressing an idea, and they have a place in the lives of humans.

The Ground Zero mosque is a symbol of Islamic triumphalism, a giant middle finger extended to America. Most Americans recognize it for what it is, and all the PC talk in the world isn't going to change the reality.

If one convinces themselves of that.

Another way to look at it will be that it would become one of symbols of American Magnamity and Greatness.

Whole world can then understand what Freedom means and who Americans are.

Or it can reinforce Al-Qaedas Mantra that America is at war with Islam and here is the proof - they took down a mosque.

If one convinces themselves of that.

I no more have to convince myself that this is an Islamic provocation and symbol of triumph than I have to convince myself that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

I think Americans have demonstrated what freedom means and who they are quite effectively. I quite frankly don't give a damn about the whole world's demands for further proof.

And I especially don't give a damn about the demands of an oppressive and primitive political movement disguised as a religion. How dare they presume to lecture us on tolerance.

What kind of fool would allow Al-Qaeda to define what's acceptable or not?
