WASHINGTON — As top Republicans including House Minority Leader John Boehner (R- Ohio) and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich attack plans for an Islamic community center and mosque near the destroyed World Trade Center site, a larger schism is opening up in the GOP over the inflammatory issue.
Some Republicans fear that pressing the issue carries risks, diverting attention from bread and butter issues and undercutting the party's efforts to broaden its base — just as it is losing ground among other ethnic minorities such as Latinos.
``This is a distraction from a winning game plan," said Grover Norquist, a conservative activist who a decade ago worked with former President George W. Bush and his political guru, Karl Rove, to cultivate Muslim American voters as well as Latinos to build a more diverse and durable Republican majority. "It is very stupid, when Republicans are poised to win an overwhelming victory in November over Democratic spending to focus attention on this issue."

Any GOP see opposing the Mosque are already brought by Saudi money. Want to have a nice cushy job after a political career like board member of a money fund or think tank financed by Saudi money, just help them fight anti Muslim sentiment and you just punched your ticket. The Mosque issue may help GOP pick up some voters in Deep Blue New York. Just look at the polls - 70 percent across party line!!! Even some of the liberal Dems are scared of not opposing the Mosque.

The reality is that 70% of the people oppose the mosque, but this isn’t a voting issue for most people. The GOP can feel free to hammer on it all they want, but I see little if any real gain in 2010 from it, provided no Democrats make any major gaffes related to the mosque. This just isn’t an issue that’s going to drive most people the polls. Republicans are probably better off focusing on the economy, but I don’t see that this hurts, either.
According to his Wikipedia biography, his wife is a Kuwaiti. He doesn’t appear to have run for or held any elective office so he shouldn’t be portrayed as speaking for a faction within the Republican Party.
This is the best they can come up with for a “schism”? Grover Norquist was long ago bought off by the Islamic lobby. He is married to a Kuwaiti. He in no way represents the Democratic Party, and joined the lefties in trying to prevent the passage of the Patriot Act.
It’s an issue that outs more RINOs. Works for me.

The problem with newspapers is that they hire generic J-school clownage who have never met an adult, so they probably see themselves as the pinnacle of intellectual ability. That really limits the range of their thought, and the effectiveness of their writing.
