FDA approves ella as 5-day-after emergency contraceptive (a/k/a abortion pill)
Washington comPost ^ | 8/14/2010 | Rob Stein

The Food and Drug Administration approved a controversial new form of emergency contraception Friday that can prevent a pregnancy as many as five days after sex.

The decision to allow the sale of the pill, which will be marketed under the brand name "ella," was welcomed by family-planning proponents as a crucial new option to prevent unwanted pregnancies. But critics condemned the decision, arguing that it was misleading to approve ella as a contraceptive because the drug could also be used to induce an abortion.

Supporters and opponents both said the decision marked the clearest evidence of a shift in the influence of political ideology at the FDA. The last time the FDA considered an emergency contraceptive -- making Plan B available without a prescription -- the decision was mired in controversy amid similar concerns voiced by antiabortion activists. After repeated delays, Plan B was approved for sale to women 17 and older without a prescription.

Ella, which was approved in Europe last year and is available in at least 22 countries, was unanimously endorsed by an FDA advisory committee less than two months ago. Women will need a prescription but could keep a supply at home.

"Women's health advocates appreciate that the review process for ella was consistent with standard FDA procedure and based on scientific evidence, not politics," said Kirsten Moore, president of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project. "Approval of ella is further evidence that the FDA is committed to restoring scientific integrity in its decisions."

For their part, critics said the decision reflected the abortion-rights stance of the Obama administration.

Pretty close to the nickname they used for “End of Life Emergency” in one of those end of the world movies ... I hate these bstrds ... they think they are damned cute ... when in fact they are just damned.

I know nothing about the medication(s) involved with this, but at face value, it doesn’t seem to be a bad thing. Not much different than a traditional birth control pill.

Not much different than a traditional birth control pill.

Do you understand that a traditional birth control pill contains a hormone (or combination of hormones) that do act as an abortifacient? It's written right in all the manufacturers' disclosures about the various formulations of the pill. They all act through one of three mechanisms:

  1. Prevention of ovulation
  2. Increase in mucous secretion that is supposed to reduce the chances of sperm being able to come in contact with the ovum
  3. Changes in the endometrium which reduce the chance of a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterine wall

A pill designed to work up to 5 days after, will vastly increase the changes of the third mechanism coming into play.

“May God have mercy on this country.”

I think our time is about up. We were once a great nation with Judeao Christian values. We are closer to Sodom now.

We still have a lot of Christians here but as a Nation we have rejected God.

Well, there goes the name “Ella” for girls. No one will want to name their little girl that anymore.

The reasonable, scientific, and obvious truth is that human life begins at conception.

Pig life begins at conception. Dog life begins at conception. Horse life begins at conception. If not, what sort of life is it?

It ia an ABORTION pill. It does NOT keep the sperm from the egg. Instead, it kills the embryo by not allowing it to implant (or by shedding it, if already implanted) in the womb.

I guess you are calling me an extremist?

In that case, let me remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.

I was defining your position, some would say that liberty is the allowing the usage of birth control. The morning after and the five day pill and the everyday old birth control pill are all one and the same and do the same thing.

Yes, some would say that. I however maintain that legally killing innocent people is not liberty.

Don't recall anyone saying anything about people. I think my statement was about cells. And if liberal is using birth control, then you and the other 2% that agree with are in deep doo doo.

“. I think my statement was about cells. “

For that matter, we are all just clumps of cells, are we not?

At conception, however, the complete genetic makeup of the human being is:

1. completed; and
2. begins to grow.

Prior to conception, there is no human being nor growth.

Interrupt the growth of a human being, you are killing a person, whether conceived two days ago or two years ago.

If you don’t believe conception is the beginning of our lives, then when do you believe our lives begin?
