In response, we may have to press the "Snooze Button" a few times:
Let's see how they are at "Missile Command" - maybe they can get some Bonus Holy Cities!
You know, that facade’s missing something...
Note to the King Abdulaziz Endowment: No need to thank me. Just contact me and I’ll tell you where to send the money.
By the way, while I was looking for images of the complex, I found out they’re apparently offering a fractional-ownership program in at least one of the towers. That’s right, chilluns, they are offering timeshares in that thing. I am not kidding.
Is the first picture real? Architecturally, it’s very odd that they would overwhelm the central symbol of their religion with those skyscrapers.

Yes it’s real and I agree with you. Actually it’s more than weird (beside being totally out of balance with its surroundings). It’s almost like the anti-Ground-Zero-Mosque.
Here you have the holiest place of Islam totally dominated by a very westernized building complex. Reminds me a bit of the Fairmont in San Francisco. In fact it will be operated by Fairmont.
There was an article posted here once about how there is an effort in Mecca to destroy many places associated with Islamic history, including the birthplace of Muhammad. IIRC this partly came from Wahhabi ideologues, who reason that such places could become a focus of “idolatry”, which is un-Islamic. But there was another source of this drive to cover over the past coming from those that want to profit from Mecca real estate.
I was surprised, too, but...look Mecca up on Google Maps and turn on the satellite photos. I’m just sayin’.
Interesting! Thanks.
Why does Mecca even *need* a clock?
