He was originally nominated to a judgeship by Ronald Reagan; the Democratic-majority Senate refused to confirm him because they said he was anti-gay(!). (In private practice, he had represented the U.S. Olympic Committee in a suit against the Gay Olympics for trademark infringement). He was eventually successfully nominated by G.H.W. Bush.
