A giant, gold-lame nightmare.
It’s always ugly o’clock in Mecca now.

This claim that the holy city is a "zero magnetism zone" has won support from some Arab scientists like Abdel-Baset al-Sayyed of the Egyptian National Research Centre who says that there is no magnetic force in Mecca. "That's why if someone travels to Mecca or lives there, he lives longer, is healthier and is less affected by the earth's gravity," he said. "You get charged with energy."
I stand in awe of Muslim science.

One of the reasons Greenwich was selected in the late 19th century was that placing the Prime Meridian there, meant the International Dateline passed through the centre of the Pacific Ocean, rather than through a continental landmass.
Mecca would not meet this criteria - if it became the Prime Meridian, the Date line would pass through North America.

But now the supremacy of Greenwich Mean Time is being challenged They're claiming victory again, just like in NYC. This time it's London. They know political correctness has the world in a strangle hold.
Anyway, their clock is irrelevant. Expensive, yes, but irrelevant. It's a big, expensive knickknack.

Yeah, setting time by the prime meridian makes no sense at all!! /s
The comments at the Telegraph are priceless!
Since Muslims have succeeded in leading the world in....ahem...well....ummmm....precisely NOTHING....I don’t predict much success in this endeavor.
Except it might make sure they are actually on time for meetings! Now that would be a refreshing change.

OK, Help me out here.
How can people build a clock that purports to be a standard for the world when they still think it’s the Sixth Century?
(By the way, that’s Sixth Century AD. Anno Domini. As in “Year of Our Lord.”)

Mecca has a greater claim to being the prime meridian because it is "in perfect alignment with the magnetic north." This claim that the holy city is a "zero magnetism zone" has won support from some Arab scientists like Abdel-Baset al-Sayyed of the Egyptian National Research Centre who says that there is no magnetic force in Mecca.
"That's why if someone travels to Mecca or lives there, he lives longer, is healthier and is less affected by the earth's gravity," he said. "You get charged with energy."

The only problem is that the year will be stuck at 999, which seems to be about the time that the Cordoba caliphate peaked (during the 10th century).
The muslims throughout the world will be able to synchronize themselves with the 10th century!

It has long been speculated that the Kaaba is in fact an ancient geodesic marker and a meridian, possibly a prime meridian. The navel there was but one of several throughout the ancient world.
It predates the Greenwich meridian by thousands of years.
Islam knew it was important but forgot the reason. They have now reverted to the original reason

I can’t bother with it. It’s a stupid waste of money and energy. And it’s not in Tehran.
They are making fools of themselves, in assuming that religious differences should be expressed as some sort of capitalist competition, i.e. the opposite of what Christ sought to express IMHO.

From the article,
Western scientists have challenged such assertions, noting that the Magnetic North Pole is in actual fact on a line of longitude that passes through Canada, the United States, Mexico and Antarctica. Doesn't every line of longitude pass through Antarctica? (Sheesh.)
