GOP gubernatorial hopeful Rick Lazio yesterday called on the Public Service Commission to zap the Ground Zero mosque because of the revelation that Con Ed owns half the site.
"As governor I will appoint commissioners . . . who, like me, oppose this group's plan to build a mosque at Ground Zero -- and I encourage New Yorkers to call the Public Service commissioners and tell them the same," he said.
The disclosure in Sunday's Post about the property's ownership proves the mosque's developers "have been operating under false pretenses," he said.

El-Gamal, of Soho Properties, paid $700,000 last year to take over a 99-year lease on the utility's building and has said he wants to buy it outright.
That could trigger a review by the commission, whose five members are appointed by the governor.
They have the power to reject a sale if it could impact the utility's capacity to deliver services.
Assemblyman Richard Brodsky (D-Westchester), who chairs the committee on corporation, authorities and commissions, personally opposes the mosque, saying, “This is the site of mass murder. It would be much better if the parties could get together and figure out something that is reasonable.”

Last week, the city's Landmark Preservation Commission gave the green light for Soho Properties to demolish the connected buildings, which the mosque would replace.
In all, the project is budgeted at $100 million and would include a community center, swimming pool and café.
The buildings formerly housed a Burlington Coat Factory but sat vacant for years.
Maybe a Pearl Harbor where LESS people were murdered we should also allow a Japanese Kamikazes bulidng honoring the Japs that bombed Pearl Harbor. Of course we wouldn't say it “honored” the murderers but it would be for fellow Japanese that thought of Pearl Harbor as a victory for them and honored the Japanese emperor who they thought of as a god.
Why not? That would be as insensitive as what these muslims are doing. BTW, how come NO ONE is flatly stating how insensitive this is to Americans in general and especially those who had family murdered there by these muslims? Why do they have a right to be so insensitive? Every single one of the murderers was Muslim.

Sounds like a terrorist oasis when you put it that way. Or as one of the Post comments said, a “YMCA for muslims.”
As for all these porcine suggestions for dealing with their presence, I say it’s: a) cowardly, and b) going to be construed as harassment, vandalism and littering, resulting in prosecution. Instead, people need to speak up loudly and directly. Don’t be so afraid of being called names. If Rudy Giuliani can call it what it is — indecent — so can we all.
US State Dept Sends Mosque Imam to Mideast

WASHINGTON– State Department officials on Monday confirmed Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Imam of the so-called Ground Zero Mosque, will soon be going on a trip of the Middle East and the U.S. government will be picking up the tab.

Rauf has emerged as a controversial figure because of his refusal to acknowledge Hamas as a terrorist organization, which is how the U.S. government classifies the group. The imam also has been quoted as saying U.S. foreign policy was in part responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
“He is a distinguished Muslim cleric,” said State Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley. “We do have a program whereby, through our Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau here at the State Department, we send people from Muslim communities here in this country around the world to help people overseas understand our society and the role of religion within our society.”
