Just for clarity, the picture was taken in 2009, how big is that pack presently?
I understand that they are predators, etc. What I’m about to say is probably not going to fly on this forum, but I need to say it. By-the-way, I am a Conservative, and not a tree hugger with a ranch background. Animals have the number of young that can be sustained. If the food source is abundant there are more. In years when the source is scarce, the birth rate is lower. Leave nature to it’s devices. Trying to “fix” this is like the liberals trying to “fix” the climate. In the cases of predators (wolves, coyotes, or feral dogs) who get the taste of blood, then you guard your animals. You take measures. But you don’t assume that it is going to happen just because you hear them in the area at night.
Man killing wolf IS nature taking it’s course.
Humans have always thinned animals populations as needed.
What is it that allows you to believe that humans are not part of the nature system? As top predator it is our choice to allow certain populations to increase while others decrease. That is how nature functions, not by some unicorn myth about man getting out of the way so nature can do its thing.
These Canadian wolves are no more indigenous to the lower 48 than would be the African lion or cheetah, or Bengal tiger.
Food will get scarce for them when they have depleted all the wildlife and maybe 90% of the humans in the continental USA. Good luck getting in that other 10%.
I don’t know the new chipmonks that have been coming onto the deck (lured with bird fruit/seeds) have been giving my 2 Labs and Dachshund quite a good hunt.
(dogs have never spent so much time outside now they are parked right at the chipmonk spot)
If you drive here along the coast on the windy hair pin turns you have areas you have to be alert for the Elk.
We have it all here. Two young bucks where sneaking by the other day as the boys napped right under their nose.
I love that about Oregon.
Bears and all. We don’t have bear on our property area but they are around in other rural areas North and South of us.
Raccoons rarely show up due to the dogs patrolling and no garbedge around but go down the road to the bay front late at night and they are hanging out on corners in small groups at the fish plants.
We live at a bird sanctuary which is good viewing.
Awesome stuff.
