Missouri Voters Oppose Mandatory Health Insurance (Missouri rejects ObamaCare!)
wall street journal ^ | 8/3/2010 | Peter Landers

Voters in Missouri overwhelmingly opposed requiring people to buy health insurance, in a largely symbolic slap at the Obama administration's health overhaul.

The referendum was the first chance for voters to express a view on the overhaul, although turnout in the state was low and Republican voters significantly outnumbered Democrats.

With all precincts reporting, 71% of voters supported Proposition C, establishing a state law that says Missouri cannot compel people to pay a penalty or fine if they fail to carry health coverage. Twenty-nine percent voted against the proposition.

The state law runs counter to the federal health law President Barack Obama signed in March, which calls on most Americans to carry coverage or pay a fine.

Some state attorneys general have challenged the insurance mandate as unconstitutional. Defenders of the law say the mandate falls within Congress's power to regulate interstate commerce and levy taxes.

Hopefully we’ll have a similar measure on our November ballot in Michigan. We did go overwhelmingly conservative in our house races despite liberals helping us to nominate a flaming liberal republican candidate for Governor.

Even Kwamee KIllpatrick’s mother was defeated last night.

The only 2 places where “no” was carried were the city of St. Louiis & Kansas City. I’m sure they voted the way they were told. It’s always important to get the vote out in rural Mo & this time people were eager, even in the heat!

Some state attorneys general have challenged the insurance mandate as unconstitutional.

I have always found it interesting how the media makes it seem like a "deep" legal question only answerable by high powered attorneys and legal scholars. It is unconstitutional. The government can't compel you to buy something. They can coerce you, like automobile insurance, but they can't force you to participate in the market place. I have predicted from day one that ultimately Obamacare wouldn't stand up to scrutiny.

Let me ask a dumb question.

If the feds beat back the Arizona immigration law will that mean that they can also beat back the Missourri law that say NO on Health Insurance.

Does a state actually have States rights anymore, or cant eh Governmetn do whatever they want to do as Stark has bragged on?

You did know that if the Democrats crossover and nominate somone very Leftwingtard that person can simply reject the nomination and drop out.

That should allow the party's central committee to select another (possibly Republican) candidate.

I'd work real hard on getting any "not sufficiently Republican" candidate to RESIGN NOW before we waste any money on him or her.

So, if this caused a big Republican turnout, why aren’t the states putting this on their ballots for the November election?

Honestly I don’t trust the Mi GOP to do any better.

There is a 3rd candidate out there who actually sounds pretty decent if she can get any traction in the remaining months. The Governor’s race isn’t like a house or senate seat where there is a meaningful majority at stake.

Very true... I consider myself a smart guy and understood the question, reading it carefully, but if you read through it fast, only half engaged mentally, the smartest among us could misunderstand it and answer no thinking their saying no to Obama Care... probably another five percent.

Kansas City and St Louis voted against the measure. Living in KC and knowing the product of our schools I’d say it’s not so much a case of misunderstanding the plan but one of illiteracy.

Official map of vote by county. One northern county voted 89.2% Yes. Stunning.

Well done, Missouri! Perhaps you should consider changing from the Show Me State to the Bite Me State?
