Strikes bring storm clouds to Greece

Greece’s olive-clad hillsides and turquoise sea gleam as enticingly as ever under the hot August sun.

But the country’s image as a relaxed Mediterranean destination has been taking a beating.

Thousands of tourists were stuck beside the hotel pool last week because of a truckers’ strike that shut down petrol stations across the country.

The strikes also triggered a wave of last-minute cancellations by Greeks in advance of the August break – the busiest period of the tourist season.

“The strike’s been suspended – but the cancellations still stand. It’s turning out to be a very difficult season,” said Yannis Economou, a hotelier on the island of Crete.

Repeated strikes, including action by merchant marine engineers that spread to tourist ferries in June, anti-austerity riots and a negative press in Germany – the main feeder market for Greek tourism, along with the UK – have dealt a blow to the country’s biggest industry at a time when its contribution to the economy is more important than ever.

Greece normally attracts about 14m tourists annually, with one-third coming from Germany and the UK. But this year visitor numbers are projected to fall by about 3.5 per cent and revenues by 10 per cent, according to tour operators and hoteliers.

As Greece’s fiscal crisis deepened, Germany’s tabloid press pilloried Greeks as lazy ouzo-drinkers seeking financial aid from hard-working north European partners in order to stave off bankruptcy.

Did you date/time stamp it too Dennis? I mean, this could be bigger than the second gunman at the Grassy Knoll. And it definitely proves that Greeks have never joined arms and danced. Ever.

I think everyone around here is getting a bit too defensive and touchy. What's next? Is someone going to cry "racism!"

I hope someone has Eric Holder on speed dial.

Well the Germans screwed up electing a Austrian usurper but they are not dumb enough to elect a muslim like idiots who watch mindless ballgames and reality TV like morons.

The Germans save their money and most do not live beyond their means.

The Greeks for all their faults fought Islam for centuries and did not elect one to run their country.

>> I got stuck Chania for about a week. It was beautiful.

Crete is, indeed, a beautiful place. I prefer it to the Greek mainland. The populus is more conservative too, if you ask me.

If you’re ever back there and in the mood for a real physical workout, take the ten mile hike down Samaria Gorge. You’ll never forget it, I guarantee.

I did trek down to the ATM machine to gets some drachmas, and almost got run over by motor scooters. After that, I sort of stuck to the hotel. There was a nude beach near by (or so I heard).

The hotel manager would also not turn on the air conditioning. Ever. We complained.

He told it was "freezing" in the hotel, when in reality it was about 92 degrees. I later learned that the air conditioning is rarely, if ever, turned on there. But, in Germany, they think they don't "need" AC either. It is very rare to see AC anywhere there.

During the summer of 2003, they kind of acknowledged they were wrong.

LOL!

It is a shame Hitler did not get jacked up on steroids, emigrate and become an actor. It might have saved Europe from WW2.

Want some more? I got stuck holding a bunch of drachma when they converted to the Euro. :-( Fifty bucks or so worth.

“But it cools down at night!”

Oh! Dennis! I am sorry, that will cost you.
