Census Shows Incomes Rising, Marriages Declining for Blacks in Prince George’s
The Washington Post ^ | August 2, 2010 | Carol Morello and Ovetta Wiggins

Kris Marsh's household doesn't have two incomes. But in Prince George's County, she is increasingly becoming the face of the black middle class.

Marsh, a sociologist at the University of Maryland, moved to Bowie last year from Los Angeles, determined to live in a place she had always heard was the promised land for educated, successful African Americans. She bought a large, single-family house in a development where many of her neighbors are also single women.

Prince George's residents personify many demographic and socioeconomic trends playing out among African Americans on a national level. In 2008, about half of the black households in the county made more than $75,000 a year, more than a quarter had four-year college degrees and unmarried women far outnumbered their married counterparts.

New census statistics from data collected in 2007 and 2008 show that an increasing number of African Americans across the country are becoming more like those in Prince George's, as well as closer to the national demographic norm. Many blacks made strides during the past decade, with education levels and incomes rising faster than those of the U.S. population as a whole.

In 2008, 20 percent of African Americans had a bachelor's or advanced degree, a 19 percent jump from 2000. The percentage of black households making more than $75,000 has gone up 42 percent since 1999, from about 13 percent to 18 percent.

According to the Prince George's planning department, more African American women made more than $75,000 than any other group, and their ranks are growing the fastest.

The median income in Prince George's has risen steadily, from about $58,000 in 2002 to $72,000 in 2008, the last year for which figures are available.

So placing free enterprise, self-improvement and personal responsibility ahead of the current regime of obtrusive statism actually works for minorities.

Even the Post can't get around that salient and inconvenient fact.

I’d bet most of these jobs are in the public school systems or as I refer to them “government holding pens.”

Hiring black women kills two birds with one stone on the affirmative action front. They get two check marks on the diversity scorecard for being a minority and a female. I would not be surprised at all to learn that governments at all levels were hiring black women more than other demographic groups.

easy explanation, when you hire a black woman... you get a two-fer when it comes to meeting diversity quotas.

I find it amusing that yuppie blacks are conservative while yuppie whites are liberal. It is almost like a scarlet letter to be a yuppie on the wrong side of the respective political spectrum.

Do you mean to tell me that blacks did far better under George W. Bush then they ever have? Why do so many blacks hate him and think he personifies racism?

I don’t think they’re necessarily conservative. Some who are in business or medicine might be. However, a large number of them are government employees. The first woman mentioned in the article works at the University of MD. MD Congressional District 4, which is mostly based in PG County, is D+31 and Steny Hoyer has been able to survive the last handful of elections because of heavy support in the PG County portion of his district. As long as the majority of blacks are on the government payroll, they will more than likely remain strongly Democratic, even if many define themselves as “socially conservative”.

Still don’t understand the mentality, hout. It’s very obvious that the blacks in this country are not students of history. If they were, they would understand that the Dems wanted to keep slavery around and that conservative ideals are what fought to give them freedom.

This isn’t good news, it’s bad.

Certainly, these women and their children are helped IF THEY ARE NOT SOON TO BE FORECLOSED UPON!!!

But what about the man? What’s the American black man earning? This is further evidence of the destruction of the Amercian black family. Government, business hiring the woman in place of the man, getting the diversity bonus.

At least the stay-at-home woman had the occupation, profession, of motherhood. The at-home dad leaves in humilation, because he’s a man and has a sense of self-worth.

I think they ought re-write the diverstity law if they wont get rid of it - hire the head-of-household over the single or female. Encourage the family structure and favor those with children over the single.

What happens when these successful women decide to have a or another child? It’s always worse and harder for all involved to have one parent rearing than two in the household.

Bush always encouraged house puchasing - sounded good. It always sounded good. In reality, it’s been a financial death sentence for those that live paycheck to paycheck.

“It’s always worse and harder for all involved to have one parent rearing than two in the household.”

True, but sometimes one parent is not interested in rearing, so that is not always an option.

—There are people who are better off not living with or even knowing their father(or mother), sad to say.

I see this as a chain of events finally leading upward out of poverty.

Previously, black men and women were confined to poor areas with the combination of crime “keeping black men down” and early pregnancy “keeping black women down”. But with the introduction of birth control, even though many black men were still incarcerated, at least black women had an opportunity to emerge from poverty through education.

This is what this article points out. That the still single black women are moving out of poverty, but black men are still incarcerated. But without black women to refresh the supply of children in the poor black neighborhoods, only those black men who are more responsible will father the next generation, and then only if they prove themselves, both educationally and financially.

So over an extended period of time, those poor blacks that remain will be culled, one way or another, with the rest moving into the middle class.

I would argue it is not all about the income.

I live in a bedroom community of DC, it is said our county has one of the Nation's highest per capita incomes, and most of the children in our neighborhood ($400K - $700K home prices today) talk and act like street thugs; have joined or started gangs, and many have already had a stint in the juvenile correctional facilities.

Mommy and Daddy are overpaid Government employees but you can't take the thug out of the thinking with just a larger income. You just spread the crime around into the suburbs.

I don’t doubt it-I heard somewhere that college educated black women make more money than white women. I always figured it was due not only to talent, but AA.
