Stealth Amnesty Creeps Ahead

Immigration: Even with time running out, Democrats haven't dropped the idea of ramming through illegal-immigrant amnesty to create more Democratic voters. Their new push shows an array of underhanded tactics to sneak that in.

After passing major programs that most Americans don't want — from a wasteful stimulus to a health care nightmare — Democrats know it's time to pay the piper with voters.

But another touchy issue — immigration — looms large on their to-do list. And because 70% of Latinos backed Democrats in 2008, a lot of mischief could be in the works — including an amnesty for illegals that would serve both as political payback and a way to create a new voting bloc.

The outlines of a plan can be seen in several ways, the first of which is Congress' mixed messages on the question of action during the lame-duck session.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., told the Hill Tuesday that House Democrats don't plan to use that pocket of time after elections in November and the seating of a new Congress in January to pass any major new legislation.

But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi isn't so sure, saying Tuesday she was "hopeful" Democrats would wrap up their work before that so a lame-duck session wouldn't be necessary.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was even more straightforward. "We're going to have a lame-duck session, so we're not giving up," he told the leftist group Net-roots Nation over the weekend.

All of this suggests the lame-duck period could be prime time for unpopular measures such as amnesty. Democrats could reward their immigration lobby supporters but evade fallout from angry voters after the elections.

I cannot believe that millions of unemployed hispanics and other minorities want to see millions more people thrown into the legitimate workforce at this time.

The political hacks may want this but it doesn’t make any sense in this economy.

This "comprehensive reform" bunch talking of needing to get people "out of the shadows" is as full of repugnicans as it is rats. Why is it every single one of them says we can not deport illegals already here? Because the rats want the prospective votes and the repugnicans want more hungry workers to suppress wages and make contributions to Social Security, so they don't really have to reform squat.

That is mathematically impossible. To repeal Obamacare and the other crap would require a 2/3rds majority of the House and Senate (to override the inevitable Presidential veto). While that is possible in the House, there simply are not enough Democrat seats on the line in the Senate, even if the GOP won every single Senate race.

We're stuck with Obamacare and - it looks like, amnesty - until Jan 21, 2013 at the earliest.

They can't override a presidential veto, but they could de-fund Obamacare. I guess Obama could use some of his stash to try and pay for it.

Note that the big "cost" of Obamacare - until the system is fully running in 2013/2014 - is the regulatory changes that happen. That doesn't need funding. Taxes are being collected, health care regulations are being re-written, and there's nothing Congress can do about it.

Rather than focusing on stopping Obamacare - we can't - we need to focus on the best way to reverse it, that will do the least damage to business and the economy.

Understand that a single regulation by the DHHS or IRS may cost $10 for them to write, but can cost hundreds of billions of dollars for the private sector to implement. Private sector businesses will drop tens of billions of dollars to rework their processes and systems to meet these new regulations, and just ripping it all out will cause even more losses.

Management of the reversal needs to be the focus, not just a blanket rip-it-out (or an impossible task of stopping it now) approach. That will only do more damage in the future.

That commie bs is out the window and Gov Brewer proved it.

Enforce the law and the criminal illegal aliens self-deport.

In the example of AZ they simply SAID they are GOING to enforce the law...

POOF! . . . GONE

Of all the Lame Duck threats, Amnesty is the greatest. Once done, it cannot be undone. It provides the defeated Dems a means of returning to power, so the motivation will be stronger. There are always a few Republicans to go along, and so we can't count on a filibuster.

The power grab would be so audacious, and the lame duckers so unaccountable, that extraordinary measures are needed to provide a check, which may have to be the States.

I’m just thinking, if a rogue defeated Dem is plotting Amnesty, can a State’s Governor/Legislature immediately recall its Senator?

Governor Brewer can count on my support as long as she wants to serve.

My mom ran a ranch while working a job in town, and raised 5 rotten kids into decent people, all by herself. I have an appreciation for strong women.

We did not wear t-shirts except as underwear in those day, but when I saw one in college that said "sometimes the best man for the job is a woman" it was so obvious, I did not understand it was a clever turn of a phrase. The one that said a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle also needed to be explained. That one stung a little.

Your concern about the lame duck session is well placed. B. Hussein can veto about any repeal repugnicans might be able to pass. Override numbers? Don't see it happening.

You seem to forget the border fiasco(S) and his spending habits.. the tax cuts were throwing the conservatives a bone.. it appears.. Border insurgents were NO Problem to Bush..

The fact the illegals WERE VOTING didnt bother George at all.. and not only voting BUT VOTING DEMOCRAT... Anchor babies didnt bother him neither..

Probably take 5 years for the democrats to grasp Bush was a true DEMOCRAT HERO.. The Bush family has always been PROGRESSIVES... as is John McLaim.. Romney and probably THE HUCKSTER TOO..

Re: Your post 18. I agree. Bush also helped illegals get bank loans for homes, and must have known they could not pay them back, and now we are not getting decent interest because the banks have to make up the lost money.
