Red Card Solution For Illegal Immigration
IBD Editorials ^ | July 27, 2010 | MICHAEL REAGAN

If there ever there was a situation where the amount of heat vastly outweighs the amount of light it's the vexing problem of how to approach illegal immigration from south of the U.S.-Mexican border.

Jan Brewer, Arizona's embattled governor, is under fire from the Obama administration because she dared to sign and enforce legislation to protect her citizens, a job the Feds are supposed to do: curb the flood of illegal immigrants that has made Phoenix, Ariz., the kidnapping capital of the world.

Instead of attacking Gov. Brewer and her handling of Arizona's illegal immigrant problem, President Obama should recognize the shocking fact that Arizona's children are being poisoned by drugs being smuggled across their border and their hospitals and emergency rooms are closing because their state is being invaded by hordes of illegal immigrants and as a result they are being rendered unable to take care of their own citizens.

Gov. Brewer and the state legislature that passed the controversial legislation are accused of being anti-immigrant when in fact their policy is anti-illegal immigrant. That's a big difference.

Illegal immigration is an out-of-control problem that will not be solved by heated presidential rhetoric. Attacking the governor of a state for supporting what amounts to emergency measures to deal with the problem is hardly a solution to the problem.

It is important to recognize that the problem of illegal immigration stems from the plight of a large portion of Mexico's population sunk deep in grinding poverty and desperate to escape. Flight northward where there is work available seems the only solution for many unemployed Mexicans.

The Bracero Program (from the Spanish word brazo, meaning "arm") was a series of laws and diplomatic agreements, initiated by an August 1942 exchange of diplomatic notes between the United States and Mexico, for the importation of temporary contract laborers from Mexico to the United States. U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt met with Mexican president Manuel Ávila Camacho, in Monterrey to discuss Mexico as part of the Allies in World War II and the Bracero Program. After the expiration of the initial agreement in 1947, the program was continued in agriculture under a variety of laws and administrative agreements until its formal end in 1964.

Michael, who says they are coming for the work?

They are coming for lots of reasons, none of them good for the safety of our children.

A neighborhood of 8-12 illegal alien men in one house does not build or maintain American society.

IMHO this doesn’t go far enough. These are low skilled jobs so they must find a way to relieve the burden they are causing to the taxpayers on every level.

Solution is to get rid of welfare and have Americans DO these jobs or starve. That may sound cruel, but it is the only thing that is going to revive the work for your living way of life. We can no longer afford for those folks to sit at home and watch TV all day and then party at night.

If they are illegal then give them 6 months in prison doing hard labor, then take them to the border and kick them out. They will think twice about coming back for another 6 month prison term.

Amen! Load them on buses and take them to the fields. Just like when they're taken to vote and to protest at union rallies.
