Turn on the evening news in Arizona and some report reflecting the state's battle with illegal immigration will likely flash across the screen.
A drop house crammed with illegal border-crossers smack in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. Traffic patrols and workplace raids that net the arrest of dozens of illegal immigrants, often in heavily Hispanic communities. Politicians speaking venomously about border violence and the leech of immigration costs on the state treasury.
Along the streets, Arizonans see day laborers near Wal-Mart and Home Depot parking lots, waiting for work. In some Phoenix-area neighborhoods, Spanish is so predominant both in spoken word and signage that residents complain they feel like they're in a foreign country.
Then rancher Robert Krentz was gunned down in March while checking water lines on his property near the border.
"You can't ignore the damage and the costs to the taxpayers and the disrespect that comes with it and those who think they have a right to break our laws," says Russell Pearce, the fiery state senator who wrote the law that is set to take effect Thursday, barring any last-minute legal action.

It doesn’t appear that WAPO is allowing comments on this article...I wonder why? /sarc
Then rancher Robert Krentz was gunned down, doing a job American’s won’t do.
But now I am beginning to wonder if this condition can change--possibly in the near future.
It doesn't make any difference how many illegals are arrested in AZ, ICE has only the money to process and deport a small percentage beyond those who are willing to self deport. Lead time for a immigration court hearing is close to a year.
So, unless Congress appropriates large sums, its all a waste of time.
That's exactly how the Obamanites will undermine AZ - "Go ahead, Arizona, arrest all the illegals you want, we're not deporting them."
Arizona is showing that you don’t have to find and deport every single one of them — you just have to deny them jobs and put the fear of deportation into them and they will self deport.
This is particularly true of the illegals with children. How about a TV ad (in Spanish) that shows what happens to the wife and children when the father is caught and deported? and pointing out that they are responsible for the consequences of breaking the law, and the hardships that their family will sustain is their fault, not the fault of the ‘gringos’. Then tell them to go home.
“Its not just the missing political will, but also the resources.”
Without jobs or welfare many would self deport. Then we could start with the ones with criminal records. Then the ones who took advantage of liberal welfare benefits. The ones who came here and worked without taking should be given green cards and go to the back of the line as far as citizenship. If they still want to become citizens after all that then that will be good because it means they really love what this country is all about.
It still trumps me to this day. Only after a “second crime” does the law start the enforcement process. And then when found guilty sent home to report back.
Ping!
Yesterday I saw an article about how businesses are closing down because their customer base was 90% illegals. Everything about their businesses catered to Spanish speakers only. My thought was, they might still be in business if they had not had such a narrow focus.
Even then, there will be the positive effect of AZ exporting their illegals to “friendlier” political jurisdictions, who will then have to deal with them in turn.
Like these “dinero” transfer operations where the illegals send their dough “back home” via wire transfer...
They’ll be out of business, of course, when there are no illegals exporting money from the US.
