A mid-summer look at midterms: How bad will bad be for the Democrats of Obama, Pelosi and Reid?

In 104 days comes the nation's next big political showdown, the first midterm elections of Democratic President Barack Obama.

Unless your name is George W. Bush or Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a president's first midterms are historically big trouble for the party controlling the White House, with modern losses for his party averaging 17 seats in the House of Representatives.

At the moment things look much worse than that for Obama's Democrats on Nov. 2, 2010.

Here's what Obama press secretary Robert Gibbs got his Biden shot off for saying earlier this month: There's no doubt there are enough seats in play that could cause Republicans to gain control" (of the House of Representatives).

Here's what House Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said last Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union": I don't think we're talking about a big loss, Candy.

Sometimes Biden predicts a Democratic upset win. But here's what he said last Sunday on ABC's "This Week:" I don't think the losses are going to be bad at all. So, just wondering, JB, exactly what kind of political losses are good?

Notice the pattern here: Losses. No talk of winning or gaining. Or even holding steady.

The predictions of GOP success by nonpartisan political prognosticators have been climbing steadily all year. One of the most respected, Stu Rothenberg, has called large GOP gains "inevitable" for months and recently raised the top of his estimate for a Republican House pickup to 33 with 15 weeks still to go.

Rothenberg adds: "Considerably larger Republican gains in excess of 39 seats are quite possible."

I wish November 2 would hurry and get here. This White House is not above pulling off any type of Chicago-style, thuggery, tactics to hold onto the 2 Houses of Congress. They're probably hoping for a Terrorist Attack on our soil to rally the nation behind the Prez and the current Congress.

This is not going to be civilized, nice, clean or quiet.

The Collectivists have tasted raw power and they’re not going to give it up with a shrug.

But they would screw-up the response like they did the oil gusher and people would have more reasons to hate them. The Chilihead-in-chief can't fix anything, he's all about breaking things (healthcare, finance, amnesty, global warming, etc.).

Our job, this in November, is to barge into Congress and tear as many of these Trojan Horses away from every knob and lever affecting public life as possible. Then, in 2012 we kick the incompetent drag-queen to the curb, hand him a pack of Marlboros and a jug of Gallo wine as parting gifts. Followed with an agency by agency fumigation that would cause Terminex to blush.

Democrats are going to hope that making the tax cuts permanent will keep them in power.

interesting to see that news come out today. It has been an obvious play since they took power. Play populist and extend the lower rates for the lower brackets. The GOP has to just say, fine. I am glad to see they finally are sold on Bush’s tax policy, but that jacking up rates of those that invest and own businesses is not going to do much for the job market.

Too early to tell. Could be bad for the Democrats. Could be disappointing for the GOP.

Never put it past Republicans to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
