Factual information over here:

BP's Deepwater Oil Spill - Taking it Day by Day - and Open Thread

*******************************EXCERPT INTRO*********************************

Posted on Sun 18 Jul 2010 09:59:27 AM PST by profgoose

Doug Shuttles was the BP representative on this morning's (Sunday morning) technical update. Mr. Shuttles said that pressure is now at 6,778 psi, and continues to build at one to two psi per hour, and this is encouraging. BP still does not see any problems.

BP now thinks that there is a possibility that the test can continue from now until the well is killed by the relief well, probably in August. But this is not a decision that can be made all at once. Instead, careful monitoring will be continued, and a decision made on a day by day basis. Admiral Allen and government representatives will no doubt be involved in decision making as well.

Mr. Shuttles said that when the cap is left on, this is really continued testing, rather than shutting the well in.

Oh what the heck. If it ain’t BP’s wildwell it’ll be the giant comet or the Myan’s 2012 end of the world planet alignment that’ll kill us all. Good greif...... the Sky is Falling

Having known Admiral Allen, I would say he has much more common sense than many engineers.

They can't get the production string down the hole.

As the fluid moves through pipe it cuts the pipe. Looks like worms have been eating it.

They can change out the production string as needed. They can't change the casing.

Eventually the casing would split and they would be back at square one with a well leaking oil into the gulf.

Why don’t they consult Al Gore? He is the acknowledged expert on all things ecological. Besides being an Ivy League intellect, he once went to theology class and therefore may have a personal insight into how Gaia feels about the decision. SHEESH! ASK AL!

I’m new to this admittedly but can’t they now put a pipe on the cap and retrieve the pressure of oil building up?

He’s just covering his arse. BP doesn’t do it, no down side for him. He’s covered. BP does do it and something goes wrong, BP’s fault, they screwed up, etc, etc.

From what I’ve read they’re going to. They’re just doing a test right now to see if it holds.
