Election looms for Democrats: How bad can it be?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – For nervous Democrats, the big question now is: How bad will November's congressional elections be?

The answer: Pretty bad.

Battling a tough political climate fueled by economic fears and President Barack Obama's political difficulties, Democrats face an uphill struggle to retain control in the House of Representatives and avoid big losses in the Senate.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs's recent statement of the obvious -- that enough races are in play for Republicans to reclaim House control -- was the latest sign of growing Democratic nervousness.

"We have always said this election is an uphill climb for Democrats. The question is the steepness of the climb," said Representative Chris Van Hollen, who heads the House Democratic Campaign Committee.

But he was adamant Democrats could avoid a loss of the House that would likely slam the brakes on Obama's legislative agenda and reshape the battle lines for the president's 2012 re-election campaign.

"We will maintain a majority in the Congress," he said.

All 435 House seats, 36 of 100 Senate seats and 37 governorships are at stake in November, with Republicans needing to gain 39 House seats and 10 Senate seats to reclaim majorities.

Republican victories would be welcomed by the business community and put Obama's plans for climate change legislation and immigration reform in doubt.

The non-partisan Cook Political Report lists more than 70 House seats as highly competitive and predicts Republicans will pick up 30 to 40 seats in November -- putting them on the cusp of a majority.

I remember Bob Novak, in 1994, predicting a 50 seat Republican swing. Every pundit laughed at him. They could not believe such a thing could happen.

Now they are predicting "as many as" 40 seats. I wouldn't be surprised to see an 80-100 seat swing. It will be a landslide, the dems will be buried.

NO, your grand arrogance thought you would rule the world and hence you rammed ObamaCare down our throats.

I have been saying +42 House +7 Senate for a long time. The Senate is actually looking a lot better an I think those number are now a minimum pickup rather than a most likely. I think they have a decent chance at getting the +10 result to take control of the senate. Of course that would put two additional RINOs into office so Obama will still have a good chance of getting 50 to pass normal stuff. But getting the 60 to override a veto would be nearly impossible in either the +7 or +10 eventuality.

From your lips to God’s ear.

An eighty seat swing would set back the progressive agenda for a generation.

We are still to far out in this election cycle to call how the House and Senate will go.
My hope is the Tea Party anger has not crested yet and that there really will be crash and burn for the Dems.
The Economy will rule the day and on that topic alone I believe the House and Senate can be turned.
I see no positive economic news coming, only worse. Obama really doesn't seem to care.

...everybody need to slow down and take a deep vreath...this thing is far from over...Obama will really start to buy votes now that the pressure is on...the Dems can go to any Public Housing project in the country and round up busloads and busloads of voters that will cancel out every one of us here on FR...and they’ll do it using taxpayers money.

Hopefully bad enough that Democrat Secretaries of State can't steal elections they lose.

True. But if the Economy isn't showing more signs of life by the end of August then the Democrats are in big trouble. If it gets worse after August then the Republicans will almost certainly take back the House with a possibility on the Senate.

Be careful of the 80-100 seat prognostications.

That could be the Dems talking...if they only lose 40-50 they can then say what a "victory" they won.

The Tet Strategy.
