Immigration reform critics are seizing on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's comments this week that seemed to downplay the number of illegal immigrants working construction jobs in Nevada, even though a recent study found that his home state had the largest percentage of undocumented workers in the country.
When a reporter from KLAS-TV in Las Vegas told Reid a 2009 Pew Hispanic Center report found 17 percent of the nation’s construction workers were undocumented, the Nevada Democrat replied: “That may be some place, but it’s not here in Nevada.”
Political opponents have tried to twist Reid’s words, saying he believes there are no illegal workers in Nevada. But Reid spokesman Jim Manley clarified his boss’ comments on Wednesday, saying the majority leader was simply disputing the reporter’s statistic and did not say the state has zero illegal workers.
In the interview, Reid also was asked why he blocked an amendment introduced by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) last year that would have required all construction firms working on economic stimulus projects to use E-Verify, the federal online system that allows employers to check whether someone is eligible to work in the country.
“That’s the reason we need to do comprehensive immigration reform,” Reid said. “We cannot do it piecemeal.”

“I think that any information you have in that regard is absolutely without foundation,” responded Reid.

That line reminded me of a line told by one of the tram-tour operators while I was riding a tourist train around the town of St.Augustine Florida.
His line was:
"Contrary to what you might have heard, there is not a single mosquito in St.Augustine!!"
...."They are all "married" with HUGE families!!".
When Harry said "There are no illegals working in Neveda!!", I can almost assure you he said that quote at around 12:15pm.......you know...while all the illegals were on their lunch break.
His quote was simply "misunderstood" and is NOW sorry for the "confusion".
Look, I despise Dingy Harry as much as the next guy, but this is political headline-seeking at its worst.
If the quote is accurate, then Harry was indeed disputing the 17% number. Watching the video, it seems that he's disputing the 17% number. Nowhere does he say there are no illegals in Nevada, and the FR headline is a lie.
In 1997, I was in two separate outdoor malls in Las Vegas. In both, there was a brisk business going on in the parking lots.
Asking a Latina friend of mine, I received the answer quite openly: Nevada Driver Licenses and social security cards were being sold to illegals for $100 each.
I called the then INS, who responded, “We know, but we don’t have the manpower to do anything about it.”
Does Harry Reid know this is still going on? He knows but he doesn’t have the willpower to do anything about it.
This is the same reporter that made Sharron Angle look like a dolt..she couldn’t even explain her own positions...and made Tommy Davis look like a fool.
