I’m touched by your naive optimism, but I have to wonder—do you actually interact with other human beings, let alone the two groups you are attempting to assimilate on paper?

And before you ask, yes, I’ve got plenty of personal experience to back up my skepticism.

Of course I interact with other humans. I am perhaps naively optimistic at times, but other times I spot potential or opportunities that other people may miss.

I know a lot of people of different backgrounds and a number of people in mixed marriages. I’m white, but have had good bosses/mentors who were black and worked in an office for years where whites and blacks had some common ground as far as getting the work done.

I realize that I’ve had a better experience than many, but it was nothing that couldn’t happen in many places in America, daily.

I’ve had exposure to black racism against whites, too, and the other way around, as well as black prejudice against darker blacks and white prejudice against “white trash”, and asian prejudice against whites and latino prejudice against blacks. I live in the real world. I just choose to pull together positive threads where I see them. A negative distortion that overlooks those threads is inaccurate, just as much as a pollyanna view is.

I would say, though, that it helps if the people involved are of the middle or upper-middle class, or are “aspiring” to move up to that. For people who are pursuing ‘The American Dream’ and raising families, they have some important things in common as Americans.

I wouldn’t overplay it, and I think you would like to blow my small point out of proportion, but I’m just saying that, if they had to pick allies, it would be more logical if blacks chose whites.
