I believe California is also the top destination for Asian immigrants as well, and they have favored the Democrats as well since at least Clinton.

According to Allan Hoffenblum, party registration among among Asian voters in California last year was 30% Democratic, 29% Republican. Among White voters, it was 42% Republican, 40% Democratic.

I'm curious how that breaks out.
For whatever reason, the vast majority of the Americans of Japanese ancestry vote Democrats (and there are even a couple leftist Congresscritters from this grouping); the Americans whose parents/grandparents came from Vietnam trend towards the Republicans (although the younger generation seems to be going to the 'dark side'). I think the Americans of Filipino Ancestry are 50-50 (the majority I know are Republicans -- but I tend to avoid leftist circles - so I think the mix is more 50-50). I think a strong majority of the Americans of Korean ancestry are Republicans. And I don't have a clue about the Americans whose ancestors came from China. Most of the ones I know trend left ... but I still would think that their natural home would be conservative.

I am surprised it’s that close in registration. But I believe the Asian vote has gone heavily for the Dems since Clinton. As Asian immigration continues, this pro-Democratic trend is almost guaranteed to continue.

High levels of immigration (even if it is all legal) reinforces and strengthens all of the factors that lead immigrant communities to vote Democratic in the first place. As long as immigration levels are high, the GOP has no chance with Hispanics and Asians.
