The birthplace of California's drive-through craze has had its fill of fast food restaurants.
Amid complaints of obesity and lines of idled cars stretching into neighborhood streets, this blue-collar town is banning new drive-throughs in hopes of shedding its reputation as a haven for convenient, fatty foods.
It's an ironic development for a community that proudly claims to have opened California's first drive-through restaurant more than 60 years ago — a little joint named, appropriately enough, In-N-Out.

Of course, the next thing the town should do is ban any other additional businesses. More businesses means more cars clogging things up. Can’t have that. High unemployment is much better. Less cars zipping around and clogging things up. Less kids getting fat from excess money. (smirk)
LOS ANGELES - A scientific study commissioned by the California Restaurant Association and nine fast-food chains has found that cars idling in restaurants' drive-thru lanes produce less air pollution than do cars that are parked and later restarted.
But contrary to published reports, the $125,000 study - which originally sought to undermine a plan to outlaw the construction of drive-thrus in Southern California - was released almost two years after state air quality regulators withdrew the threatened ban.
"The proposal was dropped back in '90" and never resurrected, said William Kelly, a spokesman for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, which had considered restrictions on drive-thrus because of now-contradicted findings that idling cars burn fuel inefficiently and generate excessive carbon monoxide.

They are very good. If you eliminate mayo and cheese on a burger, lots of calories can be eliminated.
Pretty soon they will cancel your order if it is over a certain calorie amount.

When someone approaches a governmental official with a complaint of obesity, they should be told to mind their own business.
If your kids are fat kick them out of the house and let them figure out how to play until you call them for dinner!
There are plenty of other examples round the world. It is just that CA did it with a smile on its face.
For the real future - look to the UK where the new non-left Government is looking to implement 40% (that is FORTY PERCENT) cuts in government departmental current expenditures with 50% in the 'back office' which I take to mean administrators/bureaucrats!

BTW this is one of the most dictitorial, fascist out of control governmental agencies this side of the IRS. If you're not in Cal experiencing the rulings coming from this "need to be replaced" board, thank God.

OH man, we used to go outside and play for hours! Riding bikes, playing ball, walking..................and we never had to check in either.
Today....check in with cell phone, not safe to walk here or there!
I have some great memories growing up in Chicago and being outside until the sun went down only to come home for meals/chores and then it was back outside.
More feelings-based public policy...
The first reason is absurd. If someone decides to open a tofu and salad with fat-free dressing drive-through, I'd bet they'd have no better chance of getting a permit than a place selling double bacon cheeseburgers -- nor should they.
The second reason may be valid, at least to an extent. So, mandate that new establishments have "stacking room" for cars on their property, rather than banning the establishments outright.
