Al Gore visits Solucar Platform October 30,2008(FLASHBACK)

On 18th October former Vice-President of the United States Al Gore made a private visit to the solar platform operated by Abengoa in Sanlúcar la Mayor, Seville, the largest solar platform in Europe (300 megawatts). The construction of two thermosolar plants of 50 megawatts each is scheduled to commence in Écija (Seville), to add to the first two hybrid solar combined cycle plants in the world, in Algeria and Morocco, currently under construction. The visit also included R. Pachauri, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize together with Al Gore in 2007.

Al Gore shared a day with Abengoa that included a visit to the tower of the PS10 solar plant as well as the Control Centre of the plant. They also debated the main challenges of renewable energies in their gradual, and necessary, replacement of conventional fossil fuels.

The current energy model, in which more than 80% of primary energy sources are obtained from fossil fuels, is exhausted. Exhausted, because within a few years the sources of oil and gas will become exhausted. And exhausted, above all, because it is unsustainable over time as it produces a progressive warming of the atmosphere because of the emission of greenhouse gases.

At the moment there are renewal energy sources that can gradually replace fossil fuels. Their price will be competitive without public funding in a very few years. In some cases renewable energy is already competitive: and it will be even more if the costs of the emission of greenhouse gases are internalized. The end of fossil fuels means a profound change in energy costs and in the locations of sources of energy and power.

That’s funny: I didn’t see any mention in that article of the fact that Spain’s too-quick adoption of wind and solar power schemes - two uneconomical technologies - is driving the country into bankruptcy.

It is widely considered that Spain will be in a Grecian-style budget crisis by the end of the summer, which will likely be the catalyst that destroys the “Euro Experiment.”

All because they wanted to be “Greener than Thou,” - cost be damned!

Yeah, you look down the barrel while I work the trigger. Maybe you can see what’s jamming it?
