Obama announces $2 billion for solar power

President Barack Obama announced Saturday the awarding of nearly $2 billion for new solar plants that he said will create thousands of jobs and increase the country's use of renewable energy sources.

Obama disclosed the funding in his weekly radio and online address, saying it is part of his plan to bring new industries to the U.S.

"We're going to keep competing aggressively to make sure the jobs and industries of the future are taking root right here in America," Obama said.

Obama said that while it may take years to bring back all the jobs lost during the recession, the economy is moving in a positive direction. He placed some of the blame for the slow pace of recovery on Republicans, saying GOP lawmakers, "are playing the same old Washington games and using their power to hold this relief hostage."

Obama has said that to bring the nation's economy back from the brink of a depression, it was necessary to add to the country's debt in the short term.

Obamanomics: The Dumb Wee Wee is as good at arithmetic as everything else. The idiot is going to spend $2 billion to create 1,500 permanent jobs -- or approximately $1.4 million per position. And the poor stupid boob thinks this is an accomplishment.

What a dolt. Maybe he still doesn’t realize that solar is THE MOST EXPENSIVE form of energy in terms of cost per watt in construction—something like 5-6 times more expensive than the construction of a nuke plant.

"We're going to keep competing aggressively to make sure the jobs and industries of the future are taking root right here in America,"

I can't be alone in thinking his relentless blabbing about "green jobs" indicates a very simplistic mindset. He has these one or two goofy ideas he keeps going on and on about because he seems to think that yuppies or whoever the hell he's trying to appeal to really LIKE hearing it.

"What about the economy?" "Green jobs!"

"What about energy?" "Green jobs!"

"War...terrorism...international relations...the middle class...taxes..." "Green jobs, green jobs, green jobs..."

The kindest thing I have to say about this president and his administration is that they are incompetent.

It is more likely, given the Maoist, deconstructionist bent revealed in their writings and their speeches and interviews, that they are practicing a malignant malfeasance with the intent of breaking down the freedoms and liberties venerated by our foundational documents in order to establish a tyrannical collectivist state in direct contravention to the vision engendered by our nation’s founders.

Solar may be closer to the heart of the environmental movement than all others, but it, too, will never amount to a hill of beans. The story is similar to wind: solar just can’t do any heavy lifting.
At the equator on a sunny day, 950 watts of power shines down on a square meter. That’s about 9 light bulbs’ worth. There is no way, short of violating the laws of physics, to enhance that number. In the U.S., the number is more like 400 watts over the course of a sunny day. We’re down to 4 light bulbs. However, we cannot convert 100% of this energy into electricity. Current technology captures about 15%. Half a light bulb, more or less.
If we covered every roof top of every home in America with solar panels we could likely power the lighting needs of our homes, but only during the day when the sun is shining. During the night, when we actually need lights, panels are useless. As with wind, electrical power can’t be stored at large scale.
The basic problem here is that solar power isn’t very, well, powerful.

This will go a long way toward making us “equal” to the people of his native land (Kenya). When the sun goes down we can all sit in our huts, in the dark and freeze or sweat our a$$es off.

Am I the only one who thinks this is good news? It's $2 billion. Big deal. I seem to recall that we gave almost $800 billion to the big banks who, when asked what they did with it, said they weren't going to tell us.

I also remember that in 1983, Reagan announced his Star Wars project (SDI), widely mocked by almost everyone. $100 billion later, there's still no missile defense, but there's also no Soviet Union. Who knows what could come of this? Maybe I'll apply for a grant.
