They don't want to stop this. This is the BEST fund-raising tool they've had in decades. Plus, it's not quite bad enough yet. Unlike the Valdez, there aren't enough pictures of black-oil covered beaches and drowning whales/porpoises/birds/turtles.
For 20 years (or longer), environmentalist couldn't care less about the environment. They care about the price of oil, and the higher that price the better, for them. They want Americans out of cars, and into trains where they can be controlled. I honestly believe that is what all this is about - $7/gallon gas.
