Arizona immigration law backer politician Barry Wong wants to cut power from illegal immigrant homes

One Arizona politician has made a vow to make illegal immigrants powerless -- literally.

Republican Barry Wong, a candidate for the Arizona Corporation Commission, an elected body that decides public utility issues, says he would require the utilities to check the immigration status of customers, he told the Arizona Republic.

"I'm sure there will be criticism about human-rights violations," said Wong, who held a temporary spot on the five-person Commission in 2006. "Is power or natural gas or any type of utility we regulate, is that a right that people have? It is not a right. It is a service."

Even the Liberals should be on board for this proposal. After all, it is "green". I wonder what the "carbon footprint" of illegal immigration is?

>>>yes..but why not bust them first<<<

Fair point, but I see no problem with every area of government doing what it can to deal with the problem.

This might be more effective than arresting them, as it is iffy as to whether the Federal government will actually deport them. If local authorities can make it difficult to impossible to obtain their needs, they will tend to self deport by returning home or going to a sanctuary city.

Also, those who have their power shut off, because they cannot prove their immigration status, could be referred to the proper authorities for arrest and (hopefully)deportation.

The only reason this gives me pause is I can imagine DHS doing something similar to people who they deem “domestic terror threats”....what is a “terror threat”? Why anything they decide....

Slippery slope.

Asking for “papers” is different because it deals with citizenship at the core.

If they KNOW they are illegal, they should just be deported.

And yes I know, the Federal Govt isn’t doing that. Maybe Arizona should just start deporting people themselves......to Los Angeles.

The leftist support for illegal immigration is about destroying America and getting vengeance against the innocent descendants of the “white invaders of Native American lands”.

Leftists and the south American invaders are pure evil.

I don't like this idea, for the unintended consequences of it. Most of the illegal immigrants come from 3rd world shucksholes. Humans are smart, I don't know exactly with what they will come up with to counteract that, but I'm guessing the outcome will not be good. (Running generators at all hours of the day or night, stringing extension cords from neighbors-who knows).

If this extended to water/sewer it would be way worse. You don't want them all crapping in the back yard. Unfortunately it's coming to doing stuff like this--making their life more difficult---rather that what should be done, arrest them, and deport them.

Nice try but Wong idea.

There is no criminal precursor to asking about ones citizenship status.

Besides, it would be inhumane to cut of the power during the summer.

It gets to the point of unreasonable search, to which all of us would be subjected.

They have no right to demand your papers.

If they are busted and found to be hear illegally fine, deport them but demanding citizenship status, over an elelctric bill is over the top.

Good idea though.

Still, if he wanted to impress me, he would Demand Barry’s proof of citizenship status and define what that proof would be.

This is not a search at all, and even if it was, it is not at all unreasonable. The customer is choosing to apply for service (and credit) from the utility. The utility has every right to ask him to prove his right to be in the country.

Asking for somone to prove their right to be here (especially on a one time basis, as oppposed to stopping them on the street) is not at all intrusive.

We already require employers to verify that new employees are legally eligible to work in the US. How is this different?

a) Why is a criminal precursor required? It is already common practice for proof of legal residency to be required for any number of things. (Starting a new job, getting a loan, etc.)

b) Ample warning could be given before the power is shut off, allowing the illegal invaders plenty of time to return home. Power is shut off for non-payment, during the summer, so I don’t see this an “inhumane” practice at all.

They mostly come from hotter areas. No big deal and not inhumane at all. The fact that these illegal invaders have not been dealt with already is inhumane to those of us who obey the laws.

Mercy to the guilty is injustice to the innocent

Someone who is selling you a service can request any information they want as a condition of the sale. If the electric company chooses to ONLY sell electricity to citizens or legal aliens (for whatever reason) then the customer has to prove they are a citizen or legal alien OR find another source of electricity

That is, of course, what SHOULD happen. The problem is that you need Federal cooperation to get that done. If we can gently encourage hoards of illegals to self deport, by cutting off their lights and air conditioning, it will speed up the process and make the Federal government’s job much easier. It will also be more cost effective.

I am for the “all of the above” approach to getting illegal aliens out of the country.

Um, you seem to have ignored my “/sarc” (as in “sarcasm”) tag.

The left will undoubtedly label Wong “anti-immigrant” for wanting to crack down on illegals. I was pointing out that the fact that his parents were immigrants (I assume legel ones) will help protect him from that false charge.

Oh, okay... We ask employers to prove someone is in the country legally?

Exactly how does that work? I hand you and I-9 and you provide I.D. from Columns A&B, if you haven’t I.D. in Column in column B, see column C.

This info is never sent to anyone, ever. It sits there in a file awaiting some government demand to see it, which never comes.

A company has right to determine ability to pay and creditworthiness but no imprimatur exists for demanding ones citizenship status.

Besides, what hack idiot at a company could determine the difference between all the I.D.’s out there.

I might provide an expired passport which of course would be rejected. Even though the Federal Government has supposedly done a background check on me and proclaimed me a bona fide American.

Still others, such as certain felons and parolee’s are prevented from obtaining a passport.

Most Americans wouldn’t pay the $75 dollar fee, wait for hours or days a passport office or the usual 6-8 weeks to obtain either.

Then there is the question of work visa status and determining the various classes of documentation associated the that.

Hand your documents to a utility? Go to Olivera street, in L.A. give someone $50 bucks and now you have a SS#, which should indicate you are an American.

Now the bigger leap comes when the government demands the records of suspects of some crime, from the utility and their premise is Patriot Act II.

No one has any recourse or voice under PA II and the utility is very, very obligated to comply with the demand from a PA II enforcer.

Additionally, there are many people who are citizens of another country and domicile here in the U.S. part of the year.

I have 4 or 5 friends, who are citizens of another country and are wealthy enough to live where ever they please throughout the year. In fact, variously, they have homes in CA, FL, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Virgin Islands, Caymans, Greece, England, etc.

These are all blue eyed pasty face guys. You would demand they prove they are an American? LOL they would simply vacation or live elsewhere.

This goes for even more of my friends, who are most definitely American and have homes all over the United States and world.

Documentation that I am an American. I would say to the state “you are cracked and I am selling my home”.

“Loved it here until you became part of the Nationalist Social Party but, call me when you get over this “proof” thing and want to act like you are a part of the government”.

“Sorry I won’t be using your limo services, employing your gardners, housekeepers, eating at your restaurants and generally spending my money in your state”.

Later, Tater....

Would we demand

The only way this could be effective is to spread the strong and clear message across the border and throughout Central/South America that entering the US illegally will deny you the very things that attract you to come here.

IOW,

"If you come here illegally, you will be denied 'the American Dream' that you find so attractive!"

“inhumane to cut of the power during the summer.”

People did without air conditioning for thousands of years.
I don't think any of my relatives had air conditioning until the 1950’s.

The richest person on Earth didn't have air conditioning in the 1700’s.

Probably the illegal aliens didn't have electricity and air in their homes in the old country.

If they are here legally they should be able to prove that quite easily. If they are here illegally they should be shot and the bodies properly disposed of.

Every person in this country illegally is an enemy of this country. A non-uniformed enemy combatant and should be treated as such. (That is, shot as a spy according to the geneva convention)
