Support for President Obama is waning among America’s Jewish population, polls indicate, a shift driven primarily by the president’s policies toward Israel.
The London Telegraph reported this weekend that Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, described the state of U.S.-Israeli relations in bleak terms, saying the two nations “are in a state of tectonic rift in which continents are drifting apart.” While Oren since has asserted that he was misquoted and that his words were less incendiary than reported, even relatively disinterested observers can see that relations between the allies are strained.
McLaughlin & Associates, a national polling company, recently released the “National Survey of Jewish Voters” which reported that while Jewish voters favored Obama 78 percent to 12 percent in the 2008 presidential exit polls, currently, “only 42 percent of voters would re-elect him, while the plurality (46 percent) would consider voting for someone else.”

Yes there is and it is a bit complicated.
The pogroms in old Russia because they were Jewish were stopped on them by the communist.
Post that many Jewish intellectuals in the 1900's were communist or had that bent if they were in the philosophical arena. They carry this baggage also.
So they are philosophically carrying around great great great Grandma's and GrandPa's political baggage. I have read, something like 50 to 60% young Jews are leaning towards conservative political leanings. Perhaps they are finally shedding this baggage.

Since I used to be one of them, I offer you an explanation.
The liberalism you describe is a personality characteristic of most American Jews the same way that it is a personality characteristic of most English professors. You have to acknowledge that Jews are not the only group that is overwhelmingly liberal. So are lawyers, professors of social science, humanities, etc. It is a personality characteristic.
Note that Jews in Israel, who are confronted with the realities of life, are completely different. They overwhelmingly prefer GOP candidates in US elections.
I believe that Obama was not headed toward capturing 80% of the Jewish vote in 2008 until McCain chose Palin and the lying MSM went on its smear campaign against her. That caused McCain to lose a fair number of Jews that had no intention of voting for Obama. It was disgusting, as usual, but that is the criminal MSM for you.
