I don’t remember children dying in hot cars before they were mandated to ride in the back seat.

I'm sure it happened, it just wasn't usually available at a national level - so the stories would have stayed localized.

Air bags have been around since the late 80s (pretty much everything had to have an airbag by '95). However, there is more going on here than just airbags. How society treats its young is a reflection on that society.

“why on earth should car makers make something for a parent so they do not forget they have children or do not know keeping them in a hot car is bad”

I do not give a dead rats ass about the moron parents. If they can’t remember they are parents then that is an issue for CPS. You will NEVER fix that fact that morons can procreate.

All I care about is using some technology to keep the kids alive. It IS possible to put in a motion sensor that is only active when the drivers seat is empty, the engine has been off for at least 15 minutes, and the outside air temp is above 70 degrees. The sensor can be placed in the roof to look straight down so that things outside the car do not trigger it.

“Um, yeah, or we could just start holding parents responsible for their children”

We don’t hold parents responsible for their children???..... I thought we already did that.

Ok. Get all parents together and tell them that NOW they are responsible for their kids. Particularly, single out the morons who have a tendency to leave their kid in a hot car, and tell them TWICE. There! That ought to do it.

I’m sure that kids are MUCH safer now. By the way..... we held the ones who actually have killed their poor kid by leaving him in a hot car....responsible....... And the kid is still dead.

So don’t bother trying to find out a way to defeat the moron with technology because its NOT needed now that he’s..........responsible.

Why should I put up with a $1,000 increase in my car’s sticker so someone might - just might - not lock his baby in a hot car?

I’m not sure what you’re getting at, so I gotta admit that my quality time is not talking to people in my back seat.

That doesn’t stop me from talking to people in my back seat.

Nice strawman. If you had a million dollars in your car everyday, or your spouse usually did but it was uncharacteristically your turn today...yes, you might well forget it.

But I doubt you understand. Did you read the article linked in post 52 and, if so, would you care to address it?

I was with an employee one day at lunch, riding in his vehicle. He had to stop by his house to pick up some papers. We went in the house, picked up the papers, and went to the office. Unbeknownst to us, some kid from the neighborhood had climbed in the van and had hidden in the back, apparently playing hide-and-seek with friends.

We drove 30 minutes to the office, locked the van, and went inside. A couple of hours later, he got a call from his wife. She had received frantic calls from neighbors searching for the little girl. My friend went out to his van, and saw nothing. As he was locking the doors again, he heard a whimper, and found her hiding behind the rear seat.

Apparently, she was afraid when the adults got into the van.

It was terribly hot that day. I don’t know why she didn’t perish.

>>I encourage you to take time to read the article. It might soften the tone of some of the comments on posts like these.<<

Perhaps instead of telling me to read the article, you should read my post.

And get off that horse that is so high. All I said was that I hated putting my kids in the back seat and refused to do it. It’s the reason why some kids are forgotten in cars.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you. And I’m glad you have been able to move your kids from the back seat to the front seat.

I didn’t realize my horse was so high.

PS - I did read your post, and now have re-read it. I linked the article in hope people would read it and become more understanding how forgetting a child in a car CAN happen to anyone, but fortunately only DOES happen to a very few. It is optional reading, obviously.

it is illegal for a child to ride in the front seat in NY state......any child in a car seat must be in the back.

There is such a device - it was developed for police dogs, because they must stay in the patrol car if need be:

It would work to alert parents, too.

Unfortunately, the parents who care enough to purchase such a device are not likely to forget their child in the heat of summer.

It CAN happen to anyone, just like a kid slipping into a backyard pool or disappearing in a grocery store. The best parents have had those “OMG” moments. Even me and I’m an attachment parent.

I was saying that the laws concerning kids in back have unintended consequences. Sorry about the offense and same to you. We’ve had some nasty trolls here lately.

If it’s not a first offense (i.e. they can stop you if they see it, like seat belts) I would take the chance anyway. I’m not sure it’s actually part of the law anyway rather a suggestion. Look here.

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c-1.htm

“# Can be a child safety seat, a harness, a vest or a booster seat attached with the vehicle seat belt or latch system, but not the vehicle seat belt alone, and
# Should not be used in the front seat of the vehicle.”

They tried that law in MI and they found that too many trucks and small cars either didn’t have a back seat or couldn’t fit a rear facing baby seat properly. They couldn’t make it stick. I had a tracker at the time. An infant seat would tilt at an odd angle and the baby’s head would flop forward.

it is promoted as a law here.....NO ONE does it....all car seats and booster seats are in the back seat, not the front.

It’s a good thing that we have the internet and can actually LOOK at the law.

It’s a suggestion and not a law according to the flyer from the State of New York that I linked to.

I insist that my children sit in the back. Babies are up front with me.

Nice dig, but it shows just how darnwrong you can be in regards to this topic.

Why? Do you really think a large percentage of parents are going to invest the $400.00 these alarms cost? People who are super vigilant might do so. So you are saying that super vigilant people are more likely than those who parent more casually to leave their children in a closed, over-heated car???

Good grief.

I wish I had a dime for every unnecessary law on the books in this country.

Anyway, I’m beyond leaving my kids in a car, so now I’ll start having to pray for God’s protection in raising the grandkids.
