Cleveland plans intermodal transportation center to link key landmarks

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland plans to build a long-awaited intermodal transportation center near the lakefront to link the new medical mart, convention center and Flats east bank redevelopment.

The center, north of the east edge of Mall C, would serve rail passengers, motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. It would likely extend over railroad tracks to just south of the Shoreway and include walkways to the mall and North Coast Harbor, city Planning Director Bob Brown said Tuesday.

Along with hosting a new Amtrak station that would be a stop on the proposed high-speed rail line between Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, the center would offer access to RTA's waterfront rail line.

The project, which would also include a parking deck and bicycle connectors, could be one of the most complete multimodal centers in the United States, Brown said. That should help when officials seek money from federal and state agencies to build the facility, which could open in five to 10 years, he said.

Talk about throwing good money after bad. - Who will pay in perpetuity for this boondoggle?

C'mon. There are lots of landmarks in Cleveland.

Like the former residential neighborhoods where people used to live, or the former industrial districts where people used to work, or the downtown office district where companies used to be headquartered.

Problem is, the politicians in Cleveland will be in charge. Cleveland has a crop of idiot Democrats to rival almost anywhere.

This project’s cost will skyrocket due to corruption and political payoffs. In the end, it will be poorly designed, and poorly functioning, but there will be lots of rich Democrat party officials.

As goes Cleveland, so goes the region I live in. So, yes, I’m more than a little bitter about this kind of crap.

Planning “intermodal” transport centers was all the rage a few years ago here in Western New York. There were a half dozen proposals in Buffalo (very similar to Cleveland’s), but my favorite was the concoction dreamed up in Jamestown.

Now, making something “intermodal”, of course, qualifies it for federal money because it joins two different types of transport — and we all know how very important that is. So, the planners suggested a river landing so that row-boaters on the Chadakoin, which flows through Jamestown, could dock and switch to walking!

It hasn’t been built yet, but these grant-grubbers never give up.

If there are enough boaters, building a landing sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

What would you have them do???
Jump into the water a dozen feet from shore and wade up onto the muddy bank???

Well, when you worship trains... :)

Actually, in a high-density urban environment, stuff like this “intermodal” whatchamacallit makes sense. People will already be using mass transit in a downtown area where it is reasonable to do so, and this would make it more convenient for them. But you have to be able to justify the cost first. These projects never seem to get done efficiently, they always end up as gigantic white elephants that never come close to being worth it in a reasonable analysis.

Where I get torqued off at the mass transit crowd is when they start preaching the Holy Gospel of “Light Rail” in areas that simply do not have the population density to justify it. Here in the Research Triangle in NC (Raleigh, Durham, etc.), we keep hearing about how the Powers That Be want to spend billions of dollars on a light rail system...for a sprawling, 2000-square-mile, four-county metro area of under two million people? Yeah, we have a few spots where traffic can be a pain, but just a few. Certainly nothing that couldn’t be solved by making bus services more efficient and some highway construction. But instead they’re itching to throw billions of dollars away on a light-rail boondoggle that nobody will use!

Here in the DC MSA, we actually need more public transportation.

Problem is, everything they do is FUBAR. When they built metro (WMATA) in the 1980’s, it completely bypassed Tysons - the 12th largest office center in the US.

And it skips GMU - the largest university in VA.

But in my little town (2.2 sq. miles), we have very efficient bus service - it is efficient, because it is green, and nobody rides it. A polished turd, at best.

Row boaters don't need docks & never have.
Your idea is akin to the “If we build it, they will come” principle of ever expanding government public services for the non existent needs of the very few.
