Hoyer Says Afghanistan War Funding Is Becoming a Tougher Sell

Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s controversial remarks criticizing the Obama administration — coupled with a House panel investigation finding indirect U.S. payments to warlords and the Taliban — are making it far more difficult for Democrats to sustain support for the war in Afghanistan, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer said Tuesday.

“Any bad news is not helpful in giving a sense of confidence to the American people and Congress that this effort is being successful,” Hoyer, D-Md., said.

The developments come as the House plans to consider by next week a fiscal 2010 supplemental spending bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Already, some liberal Democrats plan to oppose the spending bill because they want U.S. forces withdrawn.

House Republicans support the military effort but have voted against previous supplemental spending bills since President Obama took office to protest non-military spending that Democrats attached to the measure.

The Defense Department says it needs the new money before Congress departs July 2 for its weeklong July Fourth recess.

Hoyer said lawmakers should set aside their views about the war or McChrystal’s comments and approve the spending. “The supplemental is about the people we have on the ground now, who are at risk, who need resources. As long as they are there we ought to give them the resources they need,” Hoyer added.

There can be no compromise, we must win. Should our troops leave Afghanistan without absolute victory, not only would Obama go down in history as the President who got beat by the Taliban, our nation would face threats from that land forever. Do Steny Hoyer's Democrats not understand that our own homes are in perilous danger if we lose to the Taliban and its Al Qaeda cohorts?

Agree 100%. It will be a nightmare that we cannot imagine if we leave Afghanistan without crushing and totally defeating the terrorist enemy there.

I suggest this RAT slug tell that to the families of our troops who have a vested interest in their family members having everything needed to survive and to come back alive.

I would recommend the RATs in this despicable Congress take their rears to Afganistan and face the enemy and survive.

I can’t print in this Forum what I think of the disgraces in this Regime and this Congress.

You mean after years of telling people that the war in Afghanistan is unwinable, liberals are complaining that people now think we can’t win?

Who wants to play “Are you smarter than a Liberal Democrat Politician?”

Make no mistake. The Democrats would LOVE to cut and run out of Afghanistan. And certainly not because they are full of kumbaya, anti-war love either.

Oh no. They see the $600Billion defense budget as a huge Christmas turkey just chock full of National Socialist goodies to give away.

All part of the greater Jack Squat Barry plan...this McChrystal happening was a ‘gift’ for the Annointed Idiot....be assured of that.

How the frak can we, as a nation, go at this with “no compromise” and with a “we must win” mentality when we have an idiotPOTUS who canNOT even bring himself, outside of a photo-op, to utter the words ‘win’ or ‘victory’ in Afghanistan? Answer: you can’t....because to this idiotPOTUS, winning or victory was never an option, it was simply a means, among many others, in getting his arse into the White House based on that BS ‘hope and change’ rhetoric.

This was a setup as soon as the politicians sent conventional forces without a set of goals that were clear, obtainable, and supported by the people of the USA.

Destroying Taliban and AlQuaida bases, equipment and supplies was an obtainable goal. Nation building is not.

Providing specific and well thought out support for an ally is obtainable. Some foggy notion of creating a nation out of warring tribal warlords is an internal national interest only to that country, not some outside force unless you are planning to acquire and possess the region and severely treat all opposition. Of course, then it is a war of conquest which would not be supported by the USA.

The Democrat lefty base is itchin’ for a humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan. I was listening to Tom Hayden on NPR last night (yes that Tom Hayden — of SDS fame — NPR played one of his recent lectures for an hour commercial-free...our tax dollars at work...), and his/their attitude towards Afghanistan is nearly identical to their attitude towards Vietnam.

That’s right — let’s not forget that it was liberals who resurrected the word “quagmire” during the early days of the war in Afghanistan to humiliate Bush and demoralize the public.

Yes, they do. They *hate* you and want you *dead*.

Sheesh. How much more obvious can it get?

Democrats are the Communist Menace that finally took over America. We lost.

Now, they are in the process of destroying everything American. Everything, especially our military and history.

Really folks, you need to understand something very critical, and the failure to do so will leave you bewildered and confused: Democrats hate America and Americans, and want them both utterly destroyed.

Obama and the Treason Party aren't making mistakes. They are doing everything exactly as planned.

No. The 0bama agenda and the Rats in Congress are becoming the “tough sell.” They see their power evaporating after the midterms and are running scared.
