Because they're too eager to get their "free" cookie from big government. Like a close friend of mine who says he's now for socialism. He doesn't have the slightest clue what socialist life would be like, but like many other Dems and liberals, they think the "rich" (who obviously are all conservative Republicans) will get their wealth confiscated, and they will reap the benefits. They can't think beyond their own selfish desires.

What worries me is that it is going to have to get REALLY bad, even worse than it is now, for people to wake up. At that point I fear we will have passed the point of no return, with too few awake and willing/able to fight back.

This was written nearly 40 years ago and very few took it seriously.
Fixating upon the immediate, temporary and personal IS by definition the Liberal mentality. Sucking Conservative voters into this con has been a established campaign of the DNC. Issue by issue or in a sweeping coup, Conservatives fell for it.... certainly enough of them fell for the con to matter, WHEN it mattered. The MSM of course, was indispensable in that effort.
How rational and objective Conservative voters could permit themselves to be duped like this is beyond me!!
Now that most of the former *conspiracy theories* are coming to light, perhaps an awakening will occur.

Well, in our case, it’s more like two. My 22 year old daughter (who proudly echoes her lib boyfriend’s politics) has no concept whatsoever about the origins of freedom and liberty. For her, and people of her generation, we targeted Pursuing Liberty.
Many native born Americans think that their personal freedoms just come automatically with being born. They have no idea of the value of the legacy that previous patriots fought, bled, and even died for in order to bestow it upon Americans they’d never even meet.
And I’m always surprised at how little people will sell their souls for. These are the people that desperately need to be reminded that citizen has RESPONSIBILITIES, as well as privileges.

Conservatives have seen this coming for decades. Read None Dare Call it Treason, for starters.
The people who you should blame are the ones who threw those selfsame Conservatives under the bus, reviling them as 'crackpot' or 'extremist', discarding even the balance they could have provided to a discussion tilted toward socialism by the most extreme Leftist rhetoric, but unbalanced in the public mainstream discourse by the Conservatives.
Instead the mainstream and 'middle-of-the-road' redefined itself as the right wing, with the unenviable and self-imposed disadvantage of bargaining against the full spectrum of Leftist doctrine from the middle, and 'compromising' in a situation which led to inexorably more leftist outcomes.
Every election year, Conservatives have again raised themselves from the dustbin of politics to decry the advances of the Leftist agenda, to be reviled, marginalized, or placated by assurances their grievances would be dealt with, only to be again relegated to the fringe by their own alleged political allies.
We have heard the 'lesser of two evils' for so long that the difference has largely become marginal, the middle of the road is in the left ditch, and Socialism runs rampant at every level.
I have been aware of this for a mere fourty years, but the fight is much older than that.
Even on this site, the ideas set forth by the founders in the Constitution have been met with derision, although less so, between weeding out trolls and the fact that you would have to be so blind as to not see your hand in front of your face to miss the Socialist idealogy evident in virtually every venue or to look back along the path to totalitarianism our government has been steadily taking for a century.

Yes, it is. It is not, however, the work of a constitutional republic, which is what we had. Democracy is mob rule. Once people realize they can vote themselves anything they want, without working for it, they will. History is repeating itself, again, because we're been too ignorant or complacent to counter the thrust of these usurpers.
