Newsweek's Reed: Obama 'Out of His Cotton-Picking Mind'
NewsBusters ^ | 6-18-10 | Bob Parks

Posted on 06/18/2010 8:29:16 AM PDT by floor sweeper

"He said I know this is going to be — lead to some, quote, difficulty for the guys who work on those rigs.

Well, if he thinks that some guys on the rigs are the only people that are going to be affected by a six-month oil moratorium, he’s out of his cotton-picking mind."

I had no idea that “cotton pickin mind” had now become a racist insult. It was always just a euphemism for people who didn’t want to say somebody was out of their “G -D” mind or even out of their (obscenity) mind. It may have been meant to rhyme with “frickin.”

Oh well. I guess if you look hard enough, you can find “racism” anywhere.

Ya know... it didn’t occur to me at first that “cotton pickin’” is inherently racist, it’s used as a minor epithet so much that it has lost its underlying meaning.

There will be some left wing outrage, once they get the green light that Newsweek’s Julia Reed is a Republican from New Orleans and not a liberal Democrat just because she once lived in NYC and was editor of Vogue.

For some folks, saying "That's a pretty cloud" can be inherently racist -- that's how they view the world.

My brother-in-law as a child in rural North Carolina picked cotton. But he’s Swedish, so that probably doesn’t count. :-)

When you're a racist, like those on the left, you'll see EVERYTHING through the prism of race, and see racism in EVERYTHING that people you disagree with say (and conveniently ignore it in people you agree with).

Seeing as how my white grandmother and white grandfather both picked cotton, I'd say race ain't got nuthin' to do with it. Scrooo 'em.

Dude are you serious, Julia Reed was a regular guest on Al Franken’s AirAmerica radio show, and has substituted for Rachael Maddow on MSNBC in the past. She is hardly a conservative or a Republican.

You have your terms a little mixed up.

...the term 'cotton-picking' originated in the southern states of the USA, where it is usually pronounced cotton-pickin'. It began life in the late 1700s and differs from the 19th century Dixie term, 'cottonpicker', in that the latter was derogatory and racist, whereas 'cotton-picking' referred directly to the difficulty and harshness of gathering the crop.

Julia Reed is reasonable for a Vogue editor writer and has some southern charm but she is a liberal by FR standards.

She is actually from Greenville Mississippi...a handsome woman

'cutting in high cotton', which means 'have it easy', refers to the relatively easy task of cutting cotton without having to bend down.

I use to think I was a cotton planter earlier in my life, but I have never cut cotton or heard of it.
