In Florida Keys, Residents Plan Their Own Spill Cleanup (Conch Republic ready to strike!)

A small island in the middle of a big ocean, Key West has always made a virtue of its isolation. In 1982, for example, an onerous Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Route 1, which links the Keys to mainland Florida, resulted in the island's declaring itself the autonomous Conch Republic. This was, of course, mostly a joke ("We Seceded Where Others Failed" was its e pluribus unum), but the mayor's declaration of independence did include a twinge of real anger and a vow that "we have no intention of suffering in the future at the hands of fools and bureaucrats."

“we have no intention of suffering in the future at the hands of fools and bureaucrats.”

It ain’t fools and bureaucrats this time. EVERYTHING Obama has done in response to the oil spewing has had the effect of MAXIMIZING damage.

This is about power and control.

True. Couldn’t agree more.

But having been down to the Keys many, many times, I was not surprised one bit to see them mobilize and take this into their own hands. With permission or w/o permission.

And their threat to shut down US 1 is not an idle one. That crowd WILL do it in a second if they must.

If there is anyplace where a “shootout at the OK Corral” could break out over this oil spill, it’s in the Keys.

And the irony is, Key West is actually quite liberal and heavily Democratic. But down there, the “ornery” and “weird” tend to outweigh the “liberal.”

In some ways, I would describe the Keys as Libertarian on steroids.

LOL

I’m delighted to see this show of independence and spirit. It’s what built America and it’s what will re-build her. A sleeping giant is waking again.

LOL! That’s probably a good description. They feel isolated down there, many are there to get away from big government and big cities. I’m surprised they let the Keys be transformed into a NATIONAL marine sanctuary. Now the Kenyan “owns” it.

I guess I didn’t see the post yesterday. I haven’t had time lately to check all of the posts. Company one right after the other for the past 3 weeks and more coming this weekend and the week after. I think I will finally have a break after July 10th. I’m tired of house guests.
