FAILED teen solo sailor Abby Sunderland's team did not put a cent towards her rescue but still tried to get the public to pay for the boat's salvage. The 16-year-old American abandoned her 12m yacht Wild Eyes last week after storms snapped its mast, leaving her stranded 3700km from the West Australian coast.
She was picked up by a French fishing boat on Saturday after an international search mission costing an estimated $300,000.
Her mother MaryAnne said yesterday the family could not afford to contribute to her daughter's rescue. "We're not wealthy people," she said.
She suggested Australian rescue authorities should speak to the US Government about recouping the money.

If they can have a fund drive to save Wild Eyes, then they can pay back some of the money to save the little princess. You can’t go around endangering your life in an expensive boat and then cry poor when you are to fill some of the bill to bail you out.
Toss her back in the water, with her parents.
Please! Save Abby's Failboat! It's one of her favorites!
Now tell me how this is different from people who want the government( of other countries too!) to ‘rescue’ them and pay for their own bad judgement.
I screw up, you pay.
I would suggest she (the mother) shut-up and take her lumps. Since most of us aren’t rich, we do mundane things like saving for our retirement. The Sunderlands should try it instead of shirking responsibility.
Media Whores
Who paid for the teen's sailboat in the first place.
You certainly don't sail around the world in a dingy.
They borrowed the money to buy the boat.
The first draft of the book was already written when she left Santa Monica.
Do you know her parents? Or Abby? Many of my friend know them and you do not know WTF you are talking about. Just because people build a certain level of capability into their children and then allow those capability to be tested doesn’t make them irresponsible... rather it shows that you are too much of a coward to raise your kids at that level. So don’t speak where you do not know.
Isn’t it amazing? They’re rich enough to afford a boat and equipment need to let their daughter RISK DEATH, but they can’t afford to rescue her!
She got sponsors, the biggest being some shoe company, to pay for it. Of course, sponsors do not get much of a return on their investment when the mission fails and are not inclined to continue the funding.
I oopposed her attempt, but try on this conceptual exercise:
If the girl were black or mexican, would people be saying all this?
NOPE!
There are a MILLION things that go on which only apply to white people, and where YACHTING (or LaCrosse) is concerned, those things go TEN TIMES AS INTENSELY.
Or should they just throw Abby back to see if her swimming capabilities can be tested as well ...
Garnish the dad’s wages to pay for the rescue.
