We don’t get any free ambulance rides or doctor’s visits here. Or free search and rescue. The state of CO will charge for SAR unless you have a current hunting or fishing license. The DOW collects a .50 cent fee for SAR on every license.

“Australian taxpayers to pay for US teen sailor Abby Sunderland’s ocean rescue”

Oh My God! This is normal operating procedure. If the siktuation was reversed do you thin that Americans would be complaining about the cost o rescuing an Australian? I think not. As one commenter said...Are they really that cheap?

“And the upshot is that a volunteer crew of SEALs even sailed his yacht back to Hawaii.

I got a ton of SAR stories, but this typing takes a long time.”

I bet those SEALS do too. Just on that one yacht trip alone!

Isn’t that what the left says to people that don’t want to pay for their social programs?

As an Aussie tax payer and citizen I am happy to financially contribute to our SAR responsibilities, as custodians of our region. We’re a modern, wealthy, civilized nation that values human life above the cost of running a plane or a boat.

Sailors get into difficulties sometimes, even when all reasonable precautions are taken. Modern planes, irrespective of how reliable they are, occasionally have to ditch. People occasionally have to be rescued. How we respond in times of their need are the moments that defines our humanity as a society.

I’m quite frankly embarrassed that this article was even written.

No, no , please.. It came across differently from how I intended. I am the last person on earth who would think that way.

But you DID think that way. Apparently you still do. It is human nature to be envious. It is human nature to want to stick it to the rich guy and make him pay his "fair share" (meaning more than you would pay).

You said what you meant. It is a liberal knee jerk reaction that sometimes even afflicts conservatives.

I am all for sticking him with a huge bill that he would be paying off for the rest of his life, but that doesn't seem likely to happen.

There, you did it again.

The world is a dangerous place and she could have run into a squall on an afternoon cruise to Catalina and needed rescue. Mounting rescue missions is a legitimate function of government. It is a shared responsibility and the fact that people who have relatively dangerous hobbies where they are more likely to need rescue than risk avoiding couch potatoes is not a valid reason to "stick it to them" when because of their bravery or idiocy they need some help in getting rescued from some stupid decision.

On top of that, I don't think their parents "asked" for the Australian Government to send a charter jet to search for her. If her emergency beacon was broadcasting, that pretty much meant that the boat or her life raft was still floating. I suspect that the Australian authorities in charge of sea rescues made the decision on their own to do a search. Everyone who could pick up the beacon knew exactly where she was, so there was no need to "search".

When you call the fire department, do you expect to get a bill? Would you be in favor of rich people getting a bill when they call the fire department?

No Alex,
Just children whose idiot parents allow them to do this type of thing. If she was an adult than that is a different story. How can you not see that? I know you are smarter than that.

Just a point. The EPIRB wasn’t lost. You know, sometimes the pirb and the crew aren’t together.

Geraldo Rivera (formerly known as Jerry Rivers before Affirmative Action became chic)) has gone after the Sunderland family for “child abuse.”

I suspect that he begins from the premise that a married couple with seven children who home school and spend a lot of their time at sea must have something wrong with them. In any case, he and others are piling on.

To me, Abby looks and talks like an intelligent and well adjusted teen who could be doing a lot worse things than sailing around the world on her own. And thanks to the Aussies for helping out. I think most Aussies probably understand what Abby is all about.

That’s right, but when the EPIRB is not with the person, in big waves 2,000 miles from land, there is ZERO chance of finding the person miles away from the EPIRB treading water, or even in a raft.

I had weeks to ponder this issue a few times. I sailed from Panama to Hawaii solo, 42 days. The first month, not enough rain fell on the boat to fill a tea cup. I thought anybody in a raft without an EPIRB would have zero chance, and I’d rather be treading water WITH an EPIRB, than be in a raft without.

Yeah, just think that your life is depending on some micro spot weld on a circuit board, one of thousands, not failing. Or the battery. Stinking, couple of bucks battery.

I’m not aware of any lefties pushing themselves or their system, what ever it be, to that edge. Doing that gives you a sense of no matter what, something can go wrong fast. Nice drive down the highway? Who knew your front tire was going to blow right by the soft sand part. Kicking in a door and its too late to worry about if you should of tossed that crank magazine...

Libs just seem to live and hang out in occupations like left Great Gastsbys and leave the clean ups, the messes to others.
