THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) -- A family spokesman says searchers have contacted a 16-year-old Southern California girl who was feared lost at sea and she is alive and well.
William Bennett with "Team Abby" said Thursday that searchers aboard an Airbus A330 spotted her boat in an upright position and made contact with her via radio. Bennett said Sunderland said she was doing fine and had plenty of food.

Go Qantas!
They must be ecstatic, rightfully so.
ALL THINGS IN TIME BROTHER
good job search and rescue men and women. at a time like this no matter how us old timers are mad at the child’s folks for allowing this ‘trip’, well, the hell with that thought, I am glad she is okay.
Thank God!
Great news. I logged on to FR just to see if there was any news of Abby. I will sleep better now.
Yup! If I had not finished the last beer in the house I go open one to celebrate.
I figured she was crab food.
Good night, all.
Gunner sends
crabs? or that summer of ‘75 BIG fishy that swims out there!!!
That is wonderful news! What a great adventure for her.

Excellent news!
Good for her!
Interesting perspective. I own a much bigger sail boat than what she is sailing solo and I wouldn't be caught in the North Atlantic in the winter or I assume the Indian Ocean this time of year. I remember my submarine days up north of Iceland in the winter at PD and it was frequently NOT pleasant.
Are her parents STUPID (?/!) I know kids are. She's just a kid and has no business being there.
I can’t relate to that sort of cocoonish mindset. I’m sure this young lady can’t either.
The sea is a big place with BIG WAVES. Until you've been tossed about and realize how insignificant both the boat and you are, you possibly may be more daring. They had a choice, the RED SEA and a very probable pirate problem OR a southern passage with a near certain chance of monstrous seas and possible life threatening equipment failures.
I bet her attitude has changed to more "cocoonish" and she'd rather run past pirates than face life threatening storms.
I doubt it.
