Angry bicyclists are hoping to strike back and repeal a law taking effect in September that would force them to ride in bike lanes or hug the right side of the road.
They've even enlisted the help of state Sen. Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, himself an avid bicyclist and tri-athlete.
"I'm one of them. I'm open to just about anything," Gardiner said, including filing a bill next year.
And the bikers might not stop with just the law.
Another possibility they are considering is doing away with bike lanes altogether. That could result in more bicyclists using the roads just like a car.
"Bike lanes might not be all that we thought they were cracked up to be," said Mighk Wilson, a smart-growth planner and bike advocate at MetroPlan Orlando.
Wilson said he thinks riding in the midst of traffic is safer than bike lanes or the side of the road because bicyclists are more visible to motorists. Bike lanes, he said, often run too close to parking spaces, making riders vulnerable to people who open their car doors without looking.

something tells me despite all the bankrupt local goverments, progressives will find a way to fund this rediculous legislation.
So....
How many times are you going to post this??
;-)
Wouldn’t it be “loverly” if some township With Bike Lanes would allow pedestrians to use force to defend their sidewalks and zebra crossings from intruding cyclists.
IF cyclists truly WANT our Streets; they must surrender our sidewalks and crossWALKS!
I guess we can run in traffic... just like a car and roller blade in the lanes, and ride our horses, too?
This is stupid.
“WE WANT THE SAME RIGHTS CARS HAVE” (Hope you don’t mind if keep RUNNING THOSE PESKY STOP SIGNS, however).
So, how safe do you think it is, making a left-hand turn from the right lane of a four-lane street?
why would a bicyclist be against bike lanes?
There will be lots of bodies and scrap metal laying in the road if they do this.
Sure. A 3000 lb car going 60mph and a 15 lb bicycle going 20mph. That'll work out just fine. Just how stupid are these bicyclists anyway?
Just what we need, more arrogant bikers taking up the frickin’ road and getting themselves killed doing so. They don’t even pay gas taxes or registration fees, why should they even have the right to ride on the road at all? I ride a bike, now and then, but I certainly don’t expect to be able to hold up traffic simply because I don’t want to ride on the side of the road. Every weekend during the Summer my small town is overrun with these a**hats, slowing people down causing accidents and putting themselves and others in danger.
A bicyclist wearing one of those wacky looking teardrop helmets makes a “sweet” hood ornament on a Peterbilt.
It's not about bike lanes. It's about applying socialism to the roads and highways. "We the little people (ie bike riders) aren't any less than the big guys (motor vehicles).. and therefore deserve equal access to roads".
or through the red lights
If he wants to get his butt run over; who are we to stop him?
I bicycle commute to work 10 miles, 5 days a week. I like bike lanes, and I’ve no interest in being in the middle of the lane. Generally, our roads are wide enough for both, if the roads were narrower here it might be a different story.
