Keep in mind that "never letting a crisis go to waste" may be the reason why an article like this would appear in Business Insider in the first place. There has been a lot of pressure over the years among many U.S. business interests to overturn the Jones Act, and as I've posted previously on this thread, I'm not sure it even applies here.

Blame It On The Jones Act?

snip...

A Belgian group--DEME-- contends it can clean up the oil in three to four months with specialty vessel and equipment, rather than an estimated nine months if done only by the U.S...there are no more than 5 or 6 of those ships in the world and the top specialist players are the two Belgian companies- DEME and De Nul - and their Dutch competitors.

The U.S. does not have the similar technology...

What Is The Jones Act?

The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 is a United States Federal statute that regulates maritime commerce in U.S. waters and between U.S. ports. Section 27, also known as the Jones Act, deals with coastal shipping; and requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports be carried in U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.

snip...

On the other hand, waivers of the Jones may be granted by the Administration in cases of national emergencies or in cases of strategic interest. It would appear the U.S. government's initial refusal to foreign help most likely stemmed from a mis-calculation of the scale and deepwater technological barriers for this unprecedented disaster, and/or perhaps ..... pride.

The analysis trotted out by the authors doesn’t make sense on the surface. According to them the U.S. is turning down help due to a maritime act called the Jones Act. This act is cited to require that all shipping between U.S. ports be performed by ships which are U.S. flagged and built.

They jump to the conclusion that this would preclude foreign built ships from participating in the cleanup.

Most cruise ships which dock in the U.S are foreign built and foreign flagged. They avoid the Jones Act by putting into a foreign port during the cruise. So foreign vessels put in to U.S. ports all the time.

I don’t understand how these authors contend that the Jones Act plays in the strategy for the oil cleanup. To me this looks like a hit piece on the Jones Act.

This from the president who has increased the power of the executive branch exponentially—he couldn’t issue a Jones Act waver.

But he can take over GM & the banks.

I believe Bush did waive it but a lefist sent me a WaPo op ed from 97 that showed the USA didn’t take most of the help
and some of the help sent rotted.

My response is and you, leftist, want to repeat this behavior?

I hate so much how 0dumbo and his supporters always try to make it bout Bush

I’m sorry, I don’t believe Zer0, et al, have ever heard of the Jones Act, much less abide by it.

There is an environmental edict that doesn’t allow oil cleanup technologies unless it can remove all traces of the oil.

Apparently the skimmers used by the Dutch may leave a sheen on the water. Since not 100% of the oil is removed, no dice.

Zer0 has now relented and will allow that technology, 7 weeks too late.

The Jones Act has been waived before. It was waived under Dubya. You would think the “constitutional scholar” and sitting senator at the time would know that.

If it were not for the Jones Act there would be no US Flag
vessels there to start with, they would all be foreign with foreign crews.

The Jones Act is easily waived and is done quickly and often.

We have a community organizer for president. That is the problem.

So, you would think if someone is willing to handle the clean-up with
equipment and technology not available in the U.S., and finishes the
job in shorter time than the current estimate, the U.S. should jump
on the offer.

Of course not.
Obama and his liberal nutburger environmentalist buddies hope to make
the BP screw-up a major motivation for destroying American industrialism

Obama's black relatives were in the slave catching and selling business in Africa. In America, his white relatives (some of 'em) owned many hundreds of slaves way back when.

If anything Obama would despise the Souf' for LOSING THE WAR.

Even if they had it wouldn't matter. It'd just be some antiquated silly law.

I’d like to suggest they refused help and didn’t burn the oil at the onset because of the cozy relationship between O’s associates and the dispersant manufacturer, NALCO.

I’m just going to take a wild guess, but B.O. is probably not very popular in the Gulf States?

And I'm going to take a wild guess that the simple fact that all 5 gulf states have Republican governors has absolutely nothing to do with the administration's foot dragging.

IIRC, Bush waived the Jones ACt, so we could receive international assistance?

If true, that ould make major headlines.

Do you have a link or other evidence supporting your theory/supposition? :)
