Another Phony Veteran (Rep. Phil Hare IL-17)

There’s nothing quite so arrogant as an arrogant liberal occupying a position of power. Connecticut senate candidate Richard Blumenthal’s non-apologetic apology over his false claims to have served in Vietnam was a case point. Last week, another liberal Democrat, Illinois congressman Phil Hare (D -17) was in the news again, this time for allegedly threatening a constituent who called the congressman out over his fatuous claims of being a veteran.

You may remember Phil Hare. He was filmed telling a constituent that he doesn’t worry about the Constitution. It was a stupid thing to say, but I’m inclined to give Hare the benefit of the doubt regarding the Constitution. In the context the question he was being asked – where in the Constitution does it say that Americans have the right to health care? – he probably meant that he felt that the healthcare bill would survive a constitutional challenge, rather than thumbing his nose at that hallowed document itself. Not that many a Democrat doesn’t think in the latter terms, but they surely know better than to express such an opinion.

Only for Republicans.

For Democrats, this is a resume' enhancer.

Wrong-O! Hare is my congressman and I have had several conversations with him over just these issues. It is my firm belief that Hare truly isn't overly concerned with the constitution. I have asked him several times to explain his reasoning for supporting various legislation and he repeatedly scoffs at my concerns and suggests that his idea of what is fair or right trumps our nations blueprint.

It is disturbing.

It seems to me that he believes that he and his democrat cohorts are on the right trail. He therefore doesn't hesitate to openly express these opinions. I really don't think that he feels that his ignoring the constitution is-despite his unfortunate oath to uphold that document-unusual.

I oppose leftists as much as anyone on these forums, but this is a poorly written screed.

I have never heard such nonsense as reservists suddenly being “Not veterans”. I have never heard of someone serving a 2 year active/ 6 innactive contract being “not veterans”.

During Desert Storm I went into Kuwait with a TOW company, but I wouldn’t accuse the REMFs in Saudi or stateside of being “Not Veterans. (They might not be combat veterans though).

Creating new definitions of words like the left did with the George Allen “Maccacca” affair does not reflect well on those who engage in such shennanigans, And you can count me out.

I didn't see anyplace in the article that said he was 2 years active.

You are diverting the point of the article.

I also avoided the draft by enlisting in the Army for 3 years active service, served two years in Germany, then 4 years in the national guard.

I am not diverting it in any way shape or form.

Nowhere in the article is the man accused of claiming to have served in Vietnam.

He simply claims to be a veteran.

The reserves (even those who do not serve in active units first) are put on active duty, sent through bootcamp, and trained in an MOS. They have served in the military. And that is all that veteran means. You, the constituant, and the author of the poorly worded hit piece don’t get to redefine the word.

Period.

If Phil Hare has claimed something else that isn’t true (As Bluementhal did) then call him on that and cite what he said.

But don’t play lame semantic games, and do not try to get veterans riled up in ways that make them look stupid.

Too true. I avoided the draft by serving in Viet Nam. Ohare should have gotten what most veterans would have said to him. Unfortunately, it is mostly unprintable. I'll try...

There seems to be some stratification at play here. I don’t mean to denigrate ANYBODY’S service, but this what I see. At the highest level, there are Combat veterans, and rightfully so. Then there are active duty, but not combat, veterans. Next are reservists not called to active duty. On the low rung are National Guard.

I find this distressing. As a former Marine, there is no distinction between one Marine or another. We are all the same. Yet, when a combat veteran is in the crowd, respect is due and given.

I myself have a Vietnam Service Medal, but I am NOT a combat veteran. That is those more worthy than myself. People like my high school classmate Corporal Laurence M. King, USMC KIA Quang Tin 09/28/65 RIP Larry.

Alas, you’re right. I regret the invective. As Churchill said “They also serve who only sit around and don’t do diddly.” Or something like that...
