~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Lee, Virginia

Fort Lee is a United States Army post and headquarters of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM), U.S. Army Quartermaster Center and School (QMCS), the Army Logistics University (ALU), the U.S. Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA), and the U.S. Ordnance Center and Schools (OC&S) formerly headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. A U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) unit, the 49th Quartermaster Group (Petroleum and Water), is stationed here.

Within weeks after the United States declared war on Germany in the spring of 1917, the War Department acquired a vast tract of farmland in Prince George County, Virginia (between Petersburg and Hopewell) for the purpose of building one of 32 military cantonments. Construction of Camp Lee began in June.

By September more than 1,500 buildings and over 15 miles of on-post roads had been completed. Soon members of the 80th “Blue Ridge” Division – made up of troops from Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia – began arriving for training.

With storm clouds again rising in Europe, Congress approved the call-up of nearly 300,000 Guardsmen and Reservists in late August 1940, In September Congress passed a Selective Service Act that allowed the drafting of up to 900,000 more men for a year.

And in October the War Department issued orders for the rebuilding of Camp Lee, on the same site as before. Overnight the area became a beehive of activity as thousands of civilian laborers swarmed into the Petersburg-Hopewell area and began building at a furious pace.

Learn More About The History Of Fort Lee HERE!

There are four major commands on Fort Lee: the Combined Arms Support Command, the Quartermaster School, the U.S. Army Garrison, the Army Logistics Management College, and the headquarters for the Defense Commissary Command.

The Petroleum Training Facility (PTF) is a branch of the Petroleum and Water Department. At the PTF site, military personnel train by using equipment and the latest technologies as well as tried-and-true methods. The staff at the PTF maintains more than 14 acres of facilities and instructs more than 3,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines of all ranks each year.

Ensuring that students can safely and effectively receive, store and issue petroleum products on a wide range of fixed sites and mobile equipment is the PTF mission. The PTF system consists of 4 terminals, 2 pump stations and 11 storage tanks with a total storage capacity of 2.1 million gallons.

The Military in the Field (MIF) site is a tactical training facility of the Petroleum and Water Department. After MIF training, commanders receive mission-ready soldiers who can operate and maintain equipment to standard.

The MIF provides the necessary facilities and equipment to train Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Department of Defense civilians and foreign military personnel. Soldiers, officers, warrant officers and noncommissioned officers train at the MIF site in almost every course taught at Fort Lee, VA.

Since 1957 the U. S. Army Quartermaster Museum has preserved the history and heritage of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, the Army's oldest logistic branch.

 From the Revolution to the Persian Gulf, America's secret weapon is the one that keeps soldiers supplied with food, water, clothing, fuel, shelter and other things they can't survive combat without. This weapon is the Quartermaster Corps, and at the Quartermaster Museum, you’ll see how it’s sustained American soldiers since 1775.

REST IN PEACE, FALLEN BROTHER!

Sgt. Martin Goudreault, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment, KIA Afghanistan 6JUN2010

I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

Flowers of the Forest

Black Watch Piper

Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in peace!
We who remain hold you in high honor.
Rest, fallen brother, in this sacred precinct;
We who remain keep this place sacred.
Rest, fallen brother, among these, your comrades;
We who remain keep the watch.
Rest, fallen brother, among these who answered the Nation’s call;
We who remain press the fight forward in your name.
Rest, fallen brother, lay down thy burden;
We who remain have taken up the torch.
Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in eternal peace!
