BP: Four Specific And Immediate Needs
The Market Ticker ^ | 06/05/2010 | Karl Denninger

Posted on 06/05/2010 3:06:10 PM PDT by Attention Surplus Disorder

There are four specific and immediate things that Alabama's and Florida's State Governments must do right now in order to mitigate the damage being done by the oil spill in the Gulf.

We cannot, in all probability, prevent the spill from reaching into Mobile Bay. That is a natural bay that has little if any protection from wave action and natural flow in and out of the Gulf - it would be impractical to seal it off. Boom, for all its faults (and there are many) is all we have there.

But in Florida (and Alabama east of Mobile) we have some choices - specifically, in the following places:

I can't comment upon how effective these moves would be, but Karl lives near Destin (Niceville) and is a boater and undoubtedly knows his local waterways. I have no doubt he has considered these ideas at length. I know Karl will be forwarding this to the Army Corps of Engineers and the governnors of FL & AL. But these seem like excellent proactive moves, and if other concerned residents of the area blasted their reps with these suggestions, perhaps something could be done. You know, before 4 months of study and environmental impact reports complete negate any possible good these moves could do.

If the Federal government can’t or won’t do what’s necessaty, I think the governors of these states should take matters into their own hands.

The 10th amendment gives them that, and it seems like a good time for states to start standing up for their rights.

I live in Alabama and am appalled that nothing proactive has been or is being done!

We have a Republican governor, Bob Riley, and I was hoping he would step up like Jindal has - if he has it is not being publicized.

I only saw two news reports (on CNN) where Jindal was really "passionate" (screaming!) about the oil spill stating little has been given to him that he has requested (maybe you saw those as well). But after those two "episodes," he has not been on the news, however, someone did hear his pleas ... We Don't Believe You Mr. President.

Although I’m not in the oil business, this truly breaks my heart for many reasons.

As a yankee living in Texas, I’ve traveled RT 10 & 12 in Louisiana many many times. Although I myself don’t fish, it’s obvious from all the action there that it is/was the most fertile fishing grounds in America.

It also bothers me that the rigs are being shut down & many of my red state friends will soon be unemployed.

As soon as enough people figure out that all BP wants is a way to capture the oil, They have not done one thing to try and just stop the oil.

If Bobby Jindal had a “D” after his name, he would be the biggest hero in the world right now. Even talked about as one to challenge BO in a primary challenge in ‘12. But “R”. Nothing to see people, move along.

I've been losing a lot of money and I'm interested in finding a way to capture some of that money I've been losing and then someone criticizes me for not just stopping the income of money to begin with as a valid way of dealing with the unacceptable loss.

My house is losing a lot of heat in the wintertime and I'm interested in finding a way to retain some of that heat I've been losing and then someone criticizes me for not just shutting down the furnace to begin with as a valid way of stopping the heat loss.

I hope that changes over a period of time. I see an incredible "winner" in the Republican Party with Jindal. He's got a new book out in August, and I'm eager to read more about him, but he's an open book right now through this crisis in Louisiana, and if folks can't see he truly cares about his people in Louisiana ... they just ain't lookin'. Smart folks I know say he's smart as a whip as well. Not to mention a class act, all the way.

One of the narliest barriers in the way of trying *ANYTHING* that resembles a "process" is the nature of the enviro regulations that apply. Think: 1: Kevin Costners' machines (about which I know nothing and have no opinion, other than they can hardly make the situation worse) and 2: Pozzi's method of having the supertankers parked and vacuuming surface oil from the sea.

As the regs sit now, if you discharge oil into the water, *ANY* oil, you are subject to enormous fines. Hugh. Giant. That's for *drops* of oil, never mind gallons or bbls. So if you have a Kevin Costner machine that's (say) 90% efficient (and I don't have the foggiest notion if that's a real number) when you return the cleaned-but-not-perfectly-cleaned water to the ocean, that's *YOUR* discharge. Even if the oil you discharge is the *SAME OIL* that was there before.

So in effect, nobody can try any of these "hare brained" or even well-proven methods without subjecting themselves to 6+ figure fines.

Of course, 0bama, insightful, inspiring, and knowledgeable leader that he is, could issue exec orders overriding these regs for this situation, but I think he's got some tee-time penciled in over at Burning Tree.

Perhaps he has yet to rationalize that “Obama won’t let me” isn’t such a great excuse for not getting things done when action is of the utmost importance. He’s probably a real stand up guy, so maybe all he needs is a little bit of time to figure it out.
