The tactic is called "Divide and Conquer". By running as an Independent he doesn't have to go through the filter of a primary. By Parroting the matra of Tea Party Supporters would make him the perfect Trojan Horse for the ill informed...in order to split the vote.

Ala Ross Perot...

Your concern is noted and appreciated. We went looking for the candidates, not the other way around. The people who were on our 912 bus, for 30 hours, assigned the task to five astute and committed people. Paul convinced them and they convinced us. These are savvy people and we were all aware of the risk. We’re going to take the risk. If we’re wrong, I’m sorry. You can’t believe how we agonized over this. But, in the end, it wasn’t even close.

I would hope that we’re not being naive, because none of us has ever been this close to politics before. The average age on the bus was probably mid-fifties. The task of running Paul is was assigned to the five youngest and they are enthusiastic. Somebody is with Paul every day. (That’s tough to do when all of us have full time work.) Our feeling is, given the demographics, that Paul is the best bet.
