~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is an accredited research university operated by the United States Navy. Located in Monterey, California, it grants both master's degrees and doctoral degrees. The school also offers research fellowship opportunities at the postdoctoral level through the National Research Council research associates program.

The NPS student population is mostly active-duty officers from all branches of the U.S. Military, although U.S. Government civilians and members of foreign militaries can also matriculate under a variety of programs. Most of the faculty are civilians.

On June 9, 1909, less than four months after the completion of the record-setting world cruise of the Great White Fleet, Secretary of the Navy George von L. Meyer signed General Order No. 27, establishing a school of marine engineering at Annapolis. This small program, consisting of 10 officer students and two Navy instructors, would later become today's Naval Postgraduate School.

The best and  brightest military officers from the United States and around the world come to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, to work with world class faculty on real military and defense problems. At NPS, they gain both the intellectual know how and the practical skills for improving defense technologies, systems and programs.

NPS offers graduate programs through four graduate schools and 12 departments. Each schools and departments offer various PhD and M.S. level degrees:

Graduate School of Business & Public Policy

Graduate School of Engineering & Applied Sciences

Graduate School of Operational & Information Sciences

School of International Graduate Studies

The school has over 40 programs of study including programs in electrical and computer engineering, mechanical and astronautical engineering, space systems and satellite engineering, physics, oceanography, meteorology, applied mathematics, computer science, operations research, business and public policy, international relations, and other disciplines, all with an emphasis on military applications.

The Space Systems Academic Group of NPS has graduated thirty-three astronauts, more than any other graduate school in the country. NPS is home to the Center for Information Systems Security Studies and Research and the Center for Homeland Defense and Security. CISR is America's foremost center for defense-related research and education in Information Assurance, Inherently Trustworthy Systems, and defensive information warfare; and CHDS provides the first homeland security master's degree in the United States.

The Monterey History and Maritime Museum can trace its origins as far back as 1931, when Amelie Elkinton, then curator of Monterey’s old Mexican-era Custom House, dreamed of a waterfront maritime museum.

Today the Monterey Maritime And History Museum holds over 50,000 artifacts, costumes and textiles, photographs, and historic papers in the collection. The 580 glass prisms of the historic Fresnel lens from the Point Sur Lightstation illuminate the Museum and its exhibit areas, from the Rumsien/Ohlone Indians and Spanish explorers, to the area shipwreck USS Macon and military presence, to Monterey’s era as the sardine capital of the world, and the Hotel Del Monte, fabled destination of tourism’s early days.
