The uproar over the White House disclosure it had tapped former President Bill Clinton to see if Rep. Joe Sestak could be enticed to drop his Senate primary bid in Pennsylvania got a new round of attention on the Sunday talk shows.
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, appearing on Fox News Sunday, got this question from host Chris Wallace: “If it isn’t illegal and it isn’t improper, do you think using the former president of the United States as a political fixer and then stonewalling about it for months was dumb?”
Rendell, a strong supporter of Sen. Arlen Specter who was defeated by Sestak, replied that Clinton wasn’t a fixer since he and Sestak were close friends. Then he said: “Stonewalling it for months — yes, not smart. This explanation is perfectly reasonable. They should have put it out there at the beginning.”
Rendell also offered a parallel example. “I did the same thing in 2006 to ask a former congressman, Joe Hoeffel, to drop out of the race against Bob Casey in the primary… I said, ‘Come back and see me if you do it.’ He came back and saw me, and he was out of public service. I appointed him as a deputy secretary of commerce. He did a great job.”(continued)

Sounds like Rendell gave a “non-offer-offer.” “Come back and see me” is a way of saying “I’ll give you sumpin good... but I can’t tell you what it is .. but you won’t be disappointed... if you drop out.”
