Basic rule in the federal government is that once you reach 50 you don't work those jobs that require you to carry a gun. I'm sure there are exceptions for the highest ranked folks, and certain specialists but in general, you lose enough edge that you will definitely get killed, or really hurt, if you encounter a firefight.

The Sheriff here was probably safer without his piece than with it. He's still around to talk about the event.

Myself, I think I'm safe in a firefight if and only if I have a Howitzer to work with.
