I think they are alarmist idiots. How could a one mile long tube end up 6 miles away....?? Even at an angle

Another plume of oil, not another leak.

My brother had an idea. He thinks they should freeze the spout with some kind of freezing element.

Get a big barge and put a few of the centrifuges that are used at rendering plants, ethanol plants and waste water treatment plants. They can be set to separate oil from water at several thousand gallons a day each. Have them troll the affected areas to suck up the contanimated water and pump the separated oil into tankers. Clean water is then dumped back into the gulf.
Problem solved.
Next.

I still say that pumping in Silly Putty, or some other non-Newtonian fluid, is the only answer!

How could there possibly be a leak several miles away when the full length of the riser was 5,000 feet?

Alright, that's *it*.

How could there possibly be a leak several miles away when the full length of the riser was 5,000 feet?

The reservoir containing the oil and gas is under high pressure. Over the reservoir is bedrock, and over the bedrock is a deep layer of sediment, silt, and mud. The casing may be cracked in multiple places deep down.

I'm not a petroleum engineer, but I'm guessing that if there's a high-pressure leak deep down in the mud layer, it might carve a channel through the mud and surface some distance away.

I obviously was responding to an implication that there was a distant leak from the riser.

We all suspected that the well casing was damaged at depth. That's where much of the mud was going.

Make the spill a salvage operation ... what anyone can get - they keep. Close down the leak - the well’s yours - BP’s got 30 days before it’s open to anyone...

Scientists Warn Gulf Of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured “Beyond Repair”

A dire report circulating in the Kremlin today that was prepared for Prime Minister Putin by Anatoly Sagalevich of Russia's Shirshov Institute of Oceanology warns that the Gulf of Mexico sea floor has been fractured “beyond all repair” and our World should begin preparing for an ecological disaster “beyond comprehension” unless “extraordinary measures” are undertaken to stop the massive flow of oil into our Planet’s eleventh largest body of water.
