Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman continued her record-shattering spending streak this spring, burning through $33.8 million in about two months, according to a campaign finance statement filed Thursday.

That amount brings the billionaire candidate's spending total to more than $80 million, with $68 million of it coming from her own personal wealth.

The former chief executive officer of online auction firm eBay has said she's prepared to spend as much as $150 million of her own wealth on her campaign.

Whitman had $3.8 million in cash on hand as of May 22.

By comparison, Democratic candidate Jerry Brown had spent $259,582 from March 18 to May 22, bringing his campaign expenditure total to about $320,000. He received $6.8 million in campaign contributions from March 18 to May 22, and $16.7 million from Jan. 1 to May 22, the filing shows.

Can San Francisco hippies be bought? Whitman has spent an unbelievable amount and she’s still down by 20 points to a geriatric patient.

That's about 5% of her wealth according to some estimates.

I think you're confusing Carly fiorina (HP) with Meg Whitman (eBay).

But hey, who can blame you, their policies are very similar.

"Meg Whitman surpasses $80 million in spending on California governor's race."

In the mean time, Gerry Brown has spent $6.27 in his bid for governor and is eagerly awaiting the coming gubernatorial race.

You gotta want something pretty bad to spend $150 Million. How much is the pay for the California governor?

That’s Carly, not Meg. Meg did a good job with E-Bay, and she is well respected there.

Carly did a horrible job with HP, she was fired, and she is not respected in the HP community.

This Whitman/Poizner race is atrocious. Can’t support either one right now.

Two (rich) idiots.

Imagine you make $80,000 a year and are asked to spend just $1,000 on your campaign for election. That's how much a burden it is to Meg Whitman with her wealth.
